I presently have a 42" hdtv and want to go bigger to around 55"..how do I know if the stand I have is strong enough to hold it..?

Doing a quick search on best buy, it looks like most of the mounts that they have for 42" TVs will also work for the 55" TVs.
Depending on what type of tv that you go with, if you are switching from LCD/plasma, to LED, the 55" could be the same weight or even lighter. TVs have gotten pretty thin within the last year or two. |

Most, if not all, new HDTV's come with their own stand - you do not pay extra for it and you will not get a credit if you try to delete it.

Depending on what tv you get and the 42" you have, it might even be lighter. My 46" tv is half the weight of my much older 37" lcd.
