Here are some differences that I recall. I think the MN Fishing Regulations have a longer list.

Walleye have a white tip on the lower tail fin. Sauger don't.

Walleye have fairly 'even' coloration on their flanks. Sauger are 'blotchy'.

Sauger have dark 'dots' between the bones in their dorsal fins. Walleye don't.

Yep the only way to be 100% sure is to look for the spots on the back fin.

Has has it.

Another details which doesn't help distinguish is that walleye tend to lay their eggs in shallow water and sauger in deeper water.

You may find in some areas that have sauger and walleye there are some saugeye which may show traits of both.

the bars on a walleye stop at or near the lateral line and the saugers (blotches) bars go down past the lateral line, also the cheeks are smooth on a walleye and rough (scaley) on a sauger. I might have the cheek thing backwards I guess I'm not sure on that one but it is one way or the other, they are different

Click on the following link, then Fish I.D. Poster, Perch Family. I printed and laminated it and threw it in my storage compartment.
