How's the fishing been at Big Stone Lake near Schmitts Landing? I'll be there late July and first part of August. Helpful information would be appreciated. Thanks.

Should be about 3" of green ice by then. Probably not safe to walk on though. :-)

Check out the web site for South Dakota Tourism-- glpta.org Schmidts Landing has a weekly fishing report listed. Just go to fishing reports in the table of contents and scroll down until you get to Big Stone Lake. It is updated at least once per week- can't get much better than that. Have fun- Schmidts Landing will treat you right- nice people

Bring some lighted bobbers for fishing from the shore at night. There is a nice point by the fish cleaning house. Cast out as far as you can using a slip bobber set at about 6-7 feet. I caught more fish from the shore then I did all week from a boat.

Fished Big Stone over the Fourth of Jully weekend.
Caught alot of 14 inch walleyes. Only kept on walleyes that went 16 inches long. Best luck was on perch 10 to 11 inches long. Caught them trolling Shad raps. Fished the Hartford Beach Area. That is north of Schmitt's landing |

My dad's had a cabin at Schmidts for 38 yrs. Been fishing there about the same amount of time. I would suggest deep water (14-15' is about as good as it gets) with cranks and you'll find some feeding fish. Mallard point has a nice ledge that can be productive. A trick I use for the light algea days is an inline spinner about 6' in front of the crankbait this keeps it running clean a little longer. For the Heavy "fishing the top of an aqua blue paint can" days I switch to a three way, then most of the crap that follows your line down slides of on the dropper and keeps your cranks cleaner. Hope this helps Oh!! Chartruse is a hot color as is red or orange.
