weatherman predicted bad weather all weekend..but the weather was
perfect saturday and sunday on the south end.. saturday, we fished out of the morris point gap..lots of boats working 14 foot depth.. so we kept checking deeper and in 29 feet we found some good fish. 10 keepers by noon and one real good perch.there are lots of small fish so you keep busy. at noon the wind (which had been from the south) died and so did the bite. we checked out lighthouse gap and graceton reef, nothin. the wind eventually came up to about 5 mph from the north but it didnt change anything. sunday was sunny with a light northwest wind. we fished out of springsteel on the warroad side of the lake. i will not be able to say "all" the fish leave that side of the lake again. without any idea where to even start, we stopped on humps and rock piles and even on the flats where we marked baitfish. we caught 3 real nice walleyes, one big perch, we lost a big "something" just before we could see what it was, and caught some smaller fish to. we quit fishing at noon. dont pass up great fishing in the lake by limiting yourself to the rainey river. you can see the fish on your electronics! get anchored up and jig em. it works great, and i found out it works out of warroad too. one more thing...along with the rest of american tourism is off at the lake as well. the resorters can handle some last minute bookings. so dont let lack of advance planning keep you away from this outstanding bite. one one more more thing...thanks to paul rohweller for being a great fishing partner again. hes lots of fun and he knows his stuff. i always get to learn some good fishin stuff with paul. fish lake of the woods USA! curt quesnell |

morris point gap expect lots of real small fish along with an occasional whopper or sturgeon. bring lots of minnows. wheelers point gap (in the lake)expect the same at morris point. in the wheelers point gap, if the fish are there they will be bigger..more sturgeon. in the river its day to day, nicer fish but then, maybe no fish. if we have a "peak time" this fall it will be soon. river fishing has been getting better. it seems to be more time sensitive, early in the day-late in the day. makeing a river/lake combo day a good idea. good luck curt quesnell |

i guess i didnt answer your question. peak fall time is trophy time, lake of the woods has lots of 8 to 10 pound fish, its not uncommon to catch them that size. the small fish run from 4 inch saugers and walleyes on up. there are lots and lots and lots of them. curt quesnell |
