Default Ohio River Sauger

Sauger season getting underway here. Me and a buddy and his boy caught our limit of nice sauger below the Hannibal Locks and Dam Sunday. The surface temp is 57 degrees. Still warm, But They're Bitin! :-) Russell

Tried it a couple times at Racine Dam, didn't do very well, just a few small ones, maybe 12" long. How exactly do you fish for them, do you use a boat, and how long were the ones you caught? Thanks!

DJA, Most of the fish we caught were in the 12-16 inch size, with a few 17-18 inches. Not many cigars either. Your in a pool I never fished before for Sauger and Eyes. Down at the mouth of the Kanawha is supposed to be a great spot. Heard a lot of guys go there. We anchor below the dam about 300 yds on a couple of rock piles WV side. Using 1/4 ounce jigs, tipped with minnows. Color dont seem to be important as making sure your jigs stay in contact with the bottom. With much more current we have to go to more lead. We do well just vertically jigging. Sloooows the secret. Want to come up this way, we'd be glad to show you a few. Your only an hour or so away. Where do you live in Ripley, Masontown, Pt. Pleasant? MY WIFE AND I WENT TO WILLOW ISLAND POOL ON WED. LAST WEEK. HAD A REAL GOOD DAY. TOOK IN THE NEIBORHOOD OF 30 FISH. NO MONSTERS BUT A LOT OF FUN. WE DRIFT THE OLD RIVER CHANNEL AT THE DAM AND WOKED THE HOLES AT CREEK MOUTHS. VERTICAL JIGGING, MAN IS THAT EASY FISHING. PROBABLY GOING TO GO BACK DOWN THIS WEEKEND.

205,
Sounds like some pretty decent sauger. I've been thinking about coming down to the river. Where is Hannibal at? Is that the one south of Liverpool? I just moved to Youngstown and have been thinking about coming down. Thanks for the info. MURFA

Hey Murfa! Up in Youngstown eh? You're a good piece from here. The whole river should start producing any time now. I'm about 40 miles south of Wheeling WV, if you want to check a map. Hannibal Dam is here in New Martinsville WV, or if you like Hannibal Ohio. :-) Next lock upstream is the Pike Island Dam above Wheeling about 6-8 miles. Next one up (which would be closer to you), is the New Cumberland Locks. East Liverpool is just above the dam. I'd like to get up to the 3 rivers area, which would be easy for you to get to. Them boys up in that section of the Ohio River have a post in here. Might check them out. Dont know if they'll tell ya anything though. Know how that goes. :-) Russell
