Ive wated to long to post this info, but I was trying to figure out how to post the articles. So instead I sugjest the local library. In the Plain Dealer there were two different articles. First on 12-22-01 bus section "Canadian firm seek to run power lines under Lake Erie" Second on 12-29-01 metro sec. Feds OK gas line on lake's bottom. Now the really disturbing part is these lines will run from canada to ashtabula and Erie, the gas from canada to Ripley N.Y. The gas line is 36" in diameter, and both power and gas will be buried on the lake bot. The prosses uses a "jet plow", a high-pressure water system, to dig the 6 to 8 foot deep trenches , droping the lines in and letting the sediment settle back, closing the trench. The concern is the years of contaminated sediments such as lead and mercury that will enter the food chain through FISH. As it is, healthy adults are only supposed to eat 8oz. portion walleye per week because of contaminants! Mercury is contained in the fish muscle ,not just the fat. All fish are afected. THIS IS GOING TO HAPPEN! Unless we raise our voices, write our congressmen, start petitions, spread the word. The power lines will proceed as soon as canada has enough customers. And the Federal Energy Regulatory Comission has tentively approved the Millennium Pipeline. GO READ THE ARTICLES AND TAKE ACTION BEFORE ITS TO LATE!

A little more info ,. A 104 mile pipeline under lake Michigan is also being explored. What happens if there is a leak? Todays Plain dealer,Bus. section talks about FirstEnergy exspansion and selling power plants to NRGEnergy. Now these two power companies were mentioned as being involved with buying or selling of the power that might travel through the power lines under the lake. If this whole issue is bothering you,a call to FirstEnergy, to voice your concerns might be a place to start. Since many of us already buy power from FirstEnergy. I know I will. ITs never a done deal till it starts!Lets try and keep it from starting. Al O

OK. So, are you and most people willing to turn their thermostats down even as the "Boomers" are aging & crave more heat? And are you willing to use lower wattage bulbs even as your eyes are aging & weakening? The power companies respond to the populace's demands. The major drive here might be to get people to change their lifestyles to something less energy demanding?
What is going to happen to the east coast in 10 years when they can't run their ACs when it hits 100 F and 85% RH and there's a brown out? What will happen to CA with its rolling brownouts summer of 2002? What if this happens to MN, IL, OH, or PA this coming summer? The US has had the luxury of "unlimited" energy resources during its developmental phase. We need to change our lifestyles because underdeveloped nations will need to consume more resources to "develop" as the US has already done. Other than nuclear, our energy resources (fossile) were fixed many millions of years ago. Diificult and complex choices lie ahead. Atomic Eye -- "Gone Fission!" or is that "Fish-on?" |
