IT MAY BE WORTH IT. fISHED FRIDAY ON TOP OF SANDBAR FOR THREE HOURS AND CAUGHT A SPIKE AND A FEW WHITE BASS. ON THE WAY IN NOTED A HUGE PACK OF BOATS JUST SOUTH OF THE SANDBAR SO WHY NOT TRY? PICKED UP SEVEN WALLEYE IN 90 MINUTES WITH MANY LARGE WHITE BASS IN BETWEEN. TOUGH TROLLING WITH THAT MANY BOATS OUT THERE BUT THE FISH ARE THERE. THE LOCATION WAS JUST SOUTH AND EAST OF THE NETS.

I fished the sandbar area today and did very well. I limited out with a 28", 26" and a 25". The other three were just eaters. When I hooked the 28" I had two on at once and missed the other at the boat. It was close to the same size. I caught all my fish in a very small area. I don't have a GPS but I was on the East side of the bar and a little North of the pack. I caught three between 8:00 and 10:00 and then another three between 1:00 and 2:00. This is twice in a row that I limited out of Lorain. I was trolling copper Scorpian spoons - color didn't matter. I saw many fish caught too.
You guys are right about inconsiderate people. The same guy cut me off twice and he was looking right at me both times. I wanted to skull thump him. Tom |

Hey, Tom -- Good job! What sort of program were you running? Dipseys? If Dipseys, what setting were you using and how far back?
The last time out we did decent with downriggers. In fact, the only thing that produced for us were downriggers with the balls about 10 feet off bottom with orange crush Stingers. Side planners produced nothing. We're going out tomorrow and Wednesday and are thinking about a downrigger/Dipsey program, with the Dipseys set to swing out. I'll report the results... |

Thanks. I was using the #1 size dipseys both on a 0 setting. You guys might laugh but I don't have line counter reels so I experiment by reverse cranking my line out and just counting how many cranks back. On my reels one crank equals approximately 3 feet. I caught my fish between 26 and 28 cranks or 78'-84'. I know I was close to the bottom because every once in a while I would pick up some zebra muscles. This usually only happened when I slowly turned the boat to avoid other boats.
The bite was decent in the morning but between 1:00 and 2:00 was the best. Good luck to you. Tom |

Thanks for the info, Tom -- I only have one linecounter myself. It's not so critical when you're using downriggers, though. I will try that back cranking trick -- thanks! I have tried the line counters that clip on your rod, but they tend to pop off and are too hard to read.

Tim another way to count line-out is to measure how much line goes out for each cycle of the line guide. I put my finger over the reel and count each cycle and multiply that by the feet out per cycle. Worked for me before I got line counters.
