A friend and I would like to take our first trip to Erie in the 2nd half of April. We'd probably have to line up w. a charter as we have no experience w. the area. Any suggestions?

GopherBroke,
I operate a fishing charter service on Lake Erie and I start running charters in April. For information you can take a look at my website: www.n2net.net/members/solucki or drop me an e-mail at so-lucki@n2net.net. My website will be up dated shortly, as I now have a new 30' Sportcraft boat. The website still shows my old 27' foot Sportcraft. If you have any questions feel free to give me a call, you can gain my phone number from my website. Good Fishing, Capt. John... |

Last year I went out with captain Dwayne of Walleyewiz Guide Service. He has lower rates for groups of 1-4 guys.He trailors his boat from port to port to stay close to the hot fishing. That gives you more fishing time since he is not making long runs across the lake to hot spots. He is a great guy and will make sure you are well taken care of the whole trip.I went out twice with him last .Once on a casting trip and the other a trolling trip.Caught limits both times and have 2 trips booked with him this year again. His prices are 250.00 for up to 3 guys and he does not clock watch at all.Last year on my second trip out we had limits in a little over 2 hours and he still let us stay out there to catch and release untill our 8 hours were up. Give him a call and talk to him you will be glad you did.

I live around Lake Erie and fish there frequently, but I do not run charters. I do know most of the guys that run charters around the area that are considered to be good captains and good fisherman who know the lake better than anyone else. I would try to get in touch with Lake Land Charter Service or Dick Rhode. Both are from Port Clinton and have been fishing for years. I don't know any numbers, but if you are interested I may be able to get them for you. :)

Thanks to all for the input. Much appreciated! I'll check into these suggestions. There will only be two of us, so that may limit our options, and we have to work around some medical appointments, so I have to wait to see how all that plays out.

Just as an aside, if you have not fished Erie in April, keep in mind that your chances may be less than 50-50 that the weather will co-operate. You may need a 5 day vacation to get two good days fishing as a worst case scenario.
Take care,

I have used Randy Raudebaugh out of West Harbor and he is one of the best on Lake Erie. Randy normally trolls and we always come in with big Walleye. Most of the charter captains fish the reef's and get limits of small fish but the big fish are out in deeper water and supended. The PWT pro's all troll during April and Randy knows where to find them. Call him at 724-794-1121. He lives in Pennsylvania but grew up in Ohio.Trust me, you won't be disappointed. If you like to drift and cast he will also do that.
