Default Fort Peck

Waleyes are biting on Fort Peck. Last time out was June 14 and we caught about 20 walleyes. Most were 14-16 inchers with a few bigger ones and the biggest was 5lbs. We lost a big one and also caught an 11lb. northern and a couple smallmouth and a crappie. Most were in 7-15 feet and came on jigs and rigs with minnows. The larger fish were on cranks in a little deeper water. The water temp. remains cool at 55-58 degrees and that is the coolest I have ever seen for this time of year. The bite will get hot in the next couple weeks with warmer water and more stable weather. The last few times out we caught some real nice eyes with a 32.5 incher and some in the 7-8lb. range. The weather and wind has been real rough.

trapper -

I will be heading to Peck on July 15 for an extended weekend and am curious as to the best techniques for catching 'eyes. I used to do pretty good in July with spinner rigs and large leaches or crawlers with large willow leaf spinner blades. Last year we got a couple good fish - one was 10lb 6oz - but were caught with no blades -plain crawlers were the trick. The last few years we have been catching very few fish - sometimes lots of 10 inchers but nothing to put in a frying pan - what is the trick?

I recall back in the mid 70's when my family lived in Fort Peck - the boat would come back with monster stringers of walleye and Pike - the lake was on the rise back then and the fishing was superb to excellent - Will Peck ever be that good again?

How is the progress of the hatchery going?

I spoke with a friend who works at the marina at the #### - he said the H2O is REAL low - out past the breakers....that is LOW.

good luck and tight lines

The fishing should be real good the for the time you are planning. Usually, June and July are the best months. I don't know why you have not been catching more fish. Generally, when the water levels are dropping, you need to go a little deeper and work the main lake as opposed to the bays. There is little to hold the fish in the bays with low water levels. I have best luck for larger fish with cranks on main lake points from Snow creek to the pines that time of year. Jigs and rigs and spinner rigs will take a lot of smaller fish for the fry pan. With warmer water temps., don't be afraid to go a little deeper. 15-25 feet some days. When the wind blow, work the windward sides of the lake and the points and go shallower. Good luck.

Thanx for the info - we often pull cranks, but maybe aren't getting deep enough with them. We will put in at #### creek and probably camp across the bay or maybe somewhere near the pines. We usually head down toward the main lake body....perhaps just need to put more time on the water. I have hit the mudline with fish in it pretty good somedays....couple more questions for you:

Do you fish at night - if so, is the bite better?

Can you still put in at #### creek - how far down is the water?

I don't fish at night very often as you catch plenty during the day and the boat ramp is in good condition at #### creek.

thanx - looks like there is still some water left.....no wonder the level is high enough to put in at #### creek - all the boats raise the water level :) LOL
