I had been dying to try the fishing at Huron, Ohio ever since reading about
the outing on Walleye Central. I convinced my buddie , who has a 26'
shamrock, to go up with me. We were joined by two other friends as well.
We left the central Ohio area early and arrived late morning on Friday and
launched his boat. We braved the three and four foot waves along with the
cold and headed out about six miles off shore. Friday was not our day.
We just couldn't find the fish even though we threw everything at them. We
ended up with one small one.
We picked up our sample pack of "Bionic Minnows" at the Municipal Boat
Basin on Saturday morning and headed out. Things were slow for us until
about 11:15 a.m. We had only boated three average size fish.
We decided to stick it out for another 45 minutes to give us time to get to
the weigh in on time. Right about then , all hell broke loose! We managed
to boat five real nice fish in about 45 minutes! We debated wether or not
to stay out and continue to catch fish or get to the weigh in.
With four and five footers....we reluctantly agreed to head in. Our
biggest fish was 8.9 lbs.
Sunday proved to be our best day. Waves were 2 feet or less and the wind
had died down. It didnt take us long to get onto the fish. At one point
we had a triple hook up followed immediately by a double hookup!
All were real nice fish. We ended up with sixteen fish for the day before
deciding to head in so we could clean them before dark and get on the road
back home. The fish seemed to hit on just about everything, although
purple/black combinations, be they spoons or cranks seemed to be hottest
for us.
It was the best day I've ever had on Lake Erie and look forward
to next years gathering.
see ya,
Mike
