ESCANABA, MICH. – Lynn Hanisko and Dave Klasell of Escanaba, Mich., have won the 1999 Masters Walleye Circuit (MWC) World Walleye Championship® held June 10-11-12 on Little Bay de Noc at Escanaba/Gladstone, Mich. The Championship field, comprised of the top 50 point accumulating teams from the 1998 season, competed for the title and shared the $71,500 cash purse. Additionally, three MotorGuide electric trolling motors, valued at $1,500, were awarded as daily big fish prizes. Teams were allowed five fish per day measuring 15 inches, but only two could be over 23 inches in length. Hanisko/Klasell were in seventh place the first competition day with five fish weighing 19.24 lbs. They took the lead on day two with five fish at 20.40 lbs. Their final day five fish limit was 25.18 lbs., a total of 64.82 lbs., earning them the Championship crown and $20,000. According to Hanisko, "The first day, we fished an area between Portage and Breezy Points. On the second day, we worked around Breezy Point early, then moved south to the Ford River area and also fished in the Escanaba Yacht Harbor near the main launch facility. We finished up the last day at a spot outside of the Ford River." Klasell added, "We trolled nightcrawler spinner harnesses, number five deep-cupped gold colored Colorado blades, from in-line planer boards between seven and ten feet of water. We used 10 lb. test Tri-Max line and sprayed the crawlers with Berkley Power Bait walleye scented attractant. The key to our presentation was fishing dark colored or stained water." The champions stated that most of their fish were caught trolling over weed beds. Second place finishers were the reigning MWC Husband and Wife Team of the Year, Glenn and Carol Chenier of Gladstone, Mich. Their 15 fish totaled 57.48 lbs., worth $10,000. Third place went to the Iowa team of Chad Kinkade (Cedar Falls) and Tommy Skarlis (Waterloo). Their 13 fish weighed 53.38 lbs., earning them $5,000. The heaviest basket award, a pair of Big Jon brand electric downriggers valued at $1,000, was awarded to Wisconsinites Mark Keenan (Appleton) and Tom Keenan (Hatley), for their first day catch of 25.78 lbs. (five fish). They finished fourth and pocketed $4,000. A total of 377 walleyes weighing 1,146.06 lbs., better than a 3 lb. average, were caught in the MWC catch and release format. Indoor weigh-ins attended by standing room only audiences were held in the Butler Building at the Escanaba State Fairgrounds under the direction of the Bay de Noc Great Lakes Sport Fisherman Club. MWC Executive Director, Bob "Kaz" Kaczkowski, presented a check for $2,500 from the MWC Conservation Fund to the Club for its ongoing walleye stocking program on the Bay. To date, the fund has donated over $197,000 to fisheries projects wherever MWC tournaments are held. The year 2000 MWC World Walleye Championship
is also scheduled for Little Bay de Noc. |
