ON ICE TOUR TO VISIT 20 MILLS STORES Two of North America’s foremost ice fishing personalities will appear at 20 Mills Fleet Farm stores across Minnesota and Wisconsin over the next few weeks. Chip Leer and Tommy Skarlis, representing the On-Ice Tour they developed in 1998, will spend four hours at each location meeting interested anglers, talking fishing, and introducing visitors to the technological revolution that has changed the face of the popular Midwestern activity. "First and foremost, On Ice Tour's mission is just to generate excitement for the sport of ice fishing," says Leer. "Tommy and I love to share our passion for ice fishing with pretty much anyone who will listen. "Ice fishing has changed my life," Leer continues. "Wintertime for me used to be a bit frustrating, being a passionate angler and being introduced to ice fishing the old-fashioned way of sitting on a bucket out in the elements with a jiggle stick. "Now, with the progression of ice fishing equipment, we have portable shacks that are easy to set up and move, heaters that are safer, more reliable and more efficient, and rods and reels designed specifically for the ice fishing experience. With all of that, I think the light went on for me, and I realized this is really a lot of fun." Too many anglers still have a negative image of fishing through a hole in the ice, Skarlis adds. "People think it's cold, miserable and a lot of hard work for a few fish," he explains. "In this day and age, that's just not the case. It can be as comfortable as your living room." Both pro anglers believe success is actually better through the ice. "As a rule, I will catch more and bigger fish through a hole in the ice than I average all the days I spend on open water in the summer," Leer notes. "That's a fact. "I believe it's the fact that we can target fish better, and the environment is more controlled. There are no outside elements like weather and rapidly changing water levels affecting the fish." Mills Fleet Farm visitors can quiz Chip and Tommy about all this and more during the extensive store tour. It's also an opportunity for holiday shoppers to seek expert advice about possible gifts. Meanwhile, Skarlis and Leer will be promoting the On Ice Olympics, a youth event that will be held in conjunction with the annual $150,000 Brainerd (Minn.) Jaycees Ice Fishing Extravaganza Jan. 19. The Olympics will challenge youths of all ages in a series of activites related to ice fishing, such as setting up a portable ice tent to actually catching a fish. Prizes courtesy of On Ice Tour's sponsors and medals will be awarded. "We're excited about the Olympics," says Leer. "It's an opportunity for a lot of people to experience some of the particulars of ice fishing. We think that once they try it, they'll like it. "And we really believe in getting the youth involved. They are our future, and ice fishing is an activity they can enjoy for the rest of their lives."
