PWT Anglers Smash Big
Fish Records on Lake Erie

Port Clinton, Ohio . .In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail (PWT) anglers smashed all big fish records on day one of the Bass Pro Shops Eastern Pro-Am.

The big fish records were highlighted by a 14.64 pound walleye caught by amateur John Solek, Indianapolis, IN, the largest ever in PWT competition. It was worth $2,000 for the Bass Pro Shops biggest fish of the day. Three walleyes exceeding 12 pounds were also weighed, including a new pro record for Tom Brunz, Madison Lake, MN, with a 12.91-pounder. He won $1,200. James Backes, Marengo, IL, won $1,025 for a 12.63 pound walleye. Duck, WV amateur James Nottingham earned $950 for a 12.07-pounder.

This is the inaugural PWT tournament of 2000. A full field of 140 pros paired with amateurs; a scene to be repeated each day of the 3-day event. Best catches pay top dollar, with $225,000 to be awarded after Friday’s weigh-in ceremonies in Port Clinton’s downtown Water Works park.

The heaviest 5-walleye limit was recorded by pro Norb Wallock, Conover, WI, with 48.48 pounds, fishing with amateur Gary Morris, Blaine, MN. Close behind was pro Dave Kidd, Salem,, Ohio, with 48.41 pounds. He fished with amateur Solek. Mark Broderick, East Bethel, MN, finished the first day in third place with 48.06 pounds while fishing with amateur Steve Eisch, Neenah, WI.

Contestants enjoyed the smooth waters, which followed two stormy, cold-front days. Water temperatures creeped from about 44 degrees to nearly 50 degrees under a hazy, but bright sky. A total of 473 walleyes were weighed, averaging 7.03 pounds. A total of 56 limits were registered. Most anglers trolled crankbaits behind in-line planer  boards in depths from 32 to 45 feet.

Weigh-in ceremonies begin at 3 p.m. daily, with lots of opportunities to meet and greet the pro anglers.
