Scott Fairbairn Wins $50,000 PWT
Victory on Lake of the Woods
Baudette, MN . . . Lake of the Woods smiled at the In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail
(PWT) contestants on Friday, June 2, the final day of the Pinnacle Central Pro-Am. It started out rainy, blowing 4-foot waves from a 20 mph northwest wind, but conditions settled by 10 a.m., and the lake flattened, allowing anglers to make precise presentations for post-cold front walleyes.
Winner Scott Fairbairn, Walker, MN solved the puzzle and landed a final day catch of 24.24 pounds, collecting the $50,000 first place prize. The award included a 20-foot Lund boat, 200-hp Mercury outboard and a dual-axle Eagle trailer. His total weight was 45.22 pounds.
This marked Fairbairns second PWT victory. He holds 10 top 20 place finishes, including a fifth place in South Dakota earlier this season. He is also a past In-Fisherman Angler of the Year. He fished reefs west of Knight Island in 18 to 30 feet of water. The rock tips provided driveways for walleyes to move from the lake basin to the reefs to feed, and I waited all day for them to move up, he said. His presentation: Northland Rock Runner sliding bottom bouncers (3/4 oz.) with a Mustad Neon #6 hook on a 3 to 4 foot leader and a large leech, that had to be swimming.
Claiming second with 41.89 pounds was Eric Naig, Storm Lake, Iowa. He won $15,000. Third place and $10,000 went to 3-time PWT winner Chris Gilman, Chisago City, MN. The amateur winner of the Lund, Mercury, Eagle boat package was Jim
Muzynoski, Bozeman, MT.
Bass Pro Shops big fish for the tournament went to Muzynoski with a 10.44-pounder. He won $2,500. First place today went to
Fairbairn. His 9.32 pound walleye paid $2,000. James Broberg, Albert Lea, MN caught an 8.45 pound fish for the $1,200 second place award. Third and $1,025 went to Glenn
Rosenfeldt, Sabin, MN for a 7.62-pounder. Fourth place and $950 went to Doug Palmer, Maplewood, MN with a 7.58 pound fish.
Special awards included the Storm Heavyweight award for the biggest daily catch to Fairbairn and amateur Ryan
Lohse, Coon Rapids, MN for their third day catch. They won $500 and $300 respectively. Naig won the T-H Marine Live Release $500 award for placing highest and releasing the most walleyes. Advancing the most places, 82, through the event earned pro David
Spaid, Ft. Pierre, SD $1,000 as the Coleman Cool Under Pressure award winner. Amateur Lohse moved up 89 places and earned $600.
A total of $225,000 was awarded as a large crowd of walleye fans enjoyed the weigh-in ceremonies under sunny skies. Jill
Amundson, tournament coordinator received the honorary PWT Key Award for her commitment to a successful event. Mike
Trueman, owner of Borderview Lodge was awarded the PWT Host Award for the site and cooperation of the Lodges staff. The PWT tour travels next to Sault Ste. Marie, MI, June 21-23.
Leading the In-Fisherman Angler of the Year race is Shannon
