Contributed by Mark Sak Woods-N-Water News The Michigan Walleye Tour held it's second qualifier May 22 and 23 on beautiful Houghton Lake in Michigan's northern lower peninsula. The second stop on the tour featured 103 teams and would test versatility on this 20.044 acre shallow weedy lake which is Michigan's largest inland lake. Floating weeds and a Mayfly hatch meant finesse fishing as cranks would load up quickly. Day one bought overcast skies and a 12-15 knot easterly and 64 degrees as the first flight idled out of Holiday on the Lake. Day one leaders were the team of Yarbrough/Manz with 13.40 pounds followed closely by the team of Fesco/Fetterman with 12.90 pounds. Third place on day one was the team of Roehrs/Coker with 11.95 pounds. Day two weather conditions began similiarly
but rapidly decompensated as rain and wind swept the Lake for the last
four hours of the tournament. The team of Greg Yarbrough and Jeff Manz
boated 10.20 pounds on Sunday to snag the first place check and 140 tour
points. They were fishing with slip bobbers and swimming jigs in 5-7 feet
of water in the weeds near Songers Point on the Northeast side of the lake.
Second place honors went to the team of Robert and Tom Harlukowicz with
a two day total of 22.15 pounds. This father/son team from Gaylord Michigan
fished Chartruse/silver spinners using crawlers in the weeds. Third place
went to the team of Ernie Plant and Don Leuenberger with 21.95 pounds.
They also fished slip bobbers and spinners in the weeds in East Bay. Big
fish for the tournament went to the team of Mellama/Hawkins with a nice
5.05 walleye. They were fishing Minnows on Spinners northeast of the middlegrounds.
Tournament totals include 776 fish caught over the two days weighing 1359.75
for a 1.75 pound average.
