The Michigan Walleye Tour rolled in to Indian River June 12-13 to fish the third qualifier of the year. 108 teams idled out of Indian River
Marina and would have the ability to run this 40 mile plus inland waterway system. Weather was a factor as 100 degree temperatures in mid
June reeked havoc on teams and caused the bite to slow down significantly.
The weigh in on day one told a big story about this majestic ecosystem in Michigan's uppermost Lower Peninsula. The top nine teams all had fished Mullet Lake which offered fewer but bigger fish. With a 45 minute no wake zone between the lakes it would be difficult to get a small limit on Burt, then run to Mullet to upgrade. Day one weigh in stats revealed the team of Ernie Plant and Don Leuenberger weighed in five fish weighing 14.71 pounds. Second place on day one went to the team of Skip St. Aubin and Mike Brunet weighing 12.50. Third place was Bruce and Nick DeShano who have been on a roll this year with 12.00 pounds even. Big fish on day one was a 3.5 pound beauty caught by Bill St. Peter and Steve Bohn. Day two brought clouds and afternoon showers with wind laying down completely. Bites also slowed for many teams as the final tally indicates there was 47 teams with three fish or less for the two day event. First place honors went to the team of Jerry Fox Sr. and Jerry Fox Jr. weighing in a two day total of 24.96 pounds. They fished bottom bouncers with a 4 ft. lead in Mullet. They "outfoxed" the competion by using Lake St. Clair techniques. (Jerry Sr. is the president of the Lake St. Clair Walleye Association.) They fished #5 Indiana spinners in chart/orange with black dots. (Many rainbows inhabit this system). Second place went to Craig Nagy and Troy Hodges of Davison. They three-wayed spinners in hammered gold with floats to snag the second place check with a two day total of 24.58, also fishing mullet. Third place went to Bruce and Nick Deshano of Port Austin. They used the 10.5 ft G-Loomis rods with bottom bouncers to give some slack to these light biter's and weighed in 22.79 pounds. Big fish went to the team of Nagy/Hodges with a 5.67 pounder caught in 30 feet of water. Totals for the event include 501 fish weighing 960.35 pounds for a 1.91 average.
