Big Problems for Yamahas at the Classic

Just got back from the Bass Classic in New Orleans - great show. Heard from many different sources that Yamaha had a lot of motor problems during the tournament, especially on Friday - 10 engines lost (225 V Max Hpdi). Apparently their high-perf gearcase doesn't get enough water flowing - only 2 psi - bang fried powerheads!!!!

Well now. It seems that all those Bass guys aren't keeping an eye on their water pressure guages then huh?

Thanks for the report, but it seems a tad shy on facts. Why would someone who has knowledge of their water pressure continue on and fry their motor? Most of those bass guys run jack plates, why would they keep their motors so high that they would fry their motor? Is the water pressure you quote something that the mechanics find stored in the computer or something?

This smells like an urban legend. Of which:

I heard from a friend of a reliable source that a friend of a friend read in a prominent industry magazine that at least two of the guys in the Classic that had 250 VMax HPDIs went WOT while at a dead stand still and flexed their transoms enough that their props chopped through the transom at the point it mates with the pad. One lost all hydraulic control of his jack plate. Both reported torque rolls so fierce that they thought for sure they were going to swamp their boats over the gunnels on the port side.

Yup them 250 HPDI's are some torqueee devils. Yup heard the same thing except I heard it flipped the whole boat side a way's and then went on faster than heck running like a airboat. Yup them 250 HPDI's are torquee....

The problem gearcases must be the ones Yamaha got from Merc in exchange for Yamahas sweet 4stroke powerheads they've been using.

I run that motor on my Ranger and I agree the PSI runs lower then normal. I run around 10, if you are running at 2 I think you should get that motor back in the water some.

Huh ?

Suddenly they all blew at once - appearently only the Bayou water
has this effect upon the Yamahas. I aint fishin' in 'Naw leans'
Only Sam Rayburn, Table Rock, Bull shoals and my 'honey ho's'

Yamaha has issued a tech service bulletin on 'bayou water blows'
It's Hot Sauce !!! It eats up the impeller, reducing water pressure
then the damage occurs if the angler does not pay attention to the
TEMP. ALARM - Funny this happens to an Asian machine, they are use to a little spice in their food. I would think the the mid-west
palates of Merc where ketchup is spicy and pepper is 'too strong'
would have this issue ? Strange...

Talk to some 'Southern boys' about motors for a while and they will
give you the skinny on what runs, runs wild and breaks.
They forgot more about these motors than we yankees think we know.

They didn't run 250s at the classic - they ran 225s.

Kloss1,

How long have you worked for Merc???

I read in the local newsrag about 6 weeks ago that Merc had bought into a glass boat manufacturer in Australia. They were trying to branch out because of the "difficult U.S. market." Apparently their well-deserved reputation is causing them well-deserved problems, huh?

Your post must be part of a 2-pronged attack then, huh? 1.)Diversify in product and location. 2.)Then smear the most visible opposition.

Wow, you Yamaha guys are almost as touchy as us Merc. guys. If the original post was meant to get some bites I would say you all took her hook, line and sinker. I can hardly believe the post myself because from what I've been told Yamaha has never, ever had any problems with any of it's motors. Not a single one. The ones that have come in for repair etc. were strictly operator error. At least thats the story I heard, but then again I run a Merc., so you can't believe me.
