guidedfishing It depends if you are fishing wing dams below the dam at Redwing on the Mississippi in Mar or the solitude of a remote Canadian lake in June or somewhere in between.

In Redwing I have politely fished all day while occasionally sticking my foot out to make sure our boats did not bump together.

In Canada I have moved if someone parked with in a 1/4 mile of me.

It all depends on the day and the place. Locally if someone is on a structure I go on buy to the next, if someone pulls up on a structure I am fishing I go find a different spot. If the fish are smacking I stay put, most times that hot bite is limited to some something pretty specific so it drives them crazy watching you smack fish while they only pick up the odd straggler.

People are like cows when it comes to boats. Park two boats in one spot and 30 mins later there will be 6 boats and they will work that area over for hours not catching a fish or finding their own structure.

As soon as I see a group I think good place for them and hunt a quiet place with what I may know to have similar structure.

proguidedream if you can huck a beer can in the boat. way to close.
if they are talking normal volume and you can hear . to close.
i like to be at least far enough, if they wanted to say something they would have to yell pretty loud.

also gotta watch for groups, have been in a spot with 3 buddy boats all anchored having a good time. and some random will come up and comment on the music choice or something... not realizing we are all one group. it may look like community spot but sometimes its not.

bigwalleye1 If I'm on the structure and you're coming in, I'd prefer a couple hyundred yards. I like it solitary, so if I came in and someone was there already, I'd just move on.

Even in Canada, while there are lots of "spots" there are only a few really good "spot on the spots" on any given structure. I'd rather not share the really prime piece with an incoming boat, and would prefer to not try to mess up someone else's hot spot.

davT It all depends. Every spot is different. It depends how deep it was, water clarity, structure, wind, current, what they were fishing for, what you were fishing for, how good they were, how good you are, how many in each boat and most important - how many fish were there. If someone harmless comes in, I wouldn't mind.

I've caught lots of fish, but making a new friend never gets old.

Plenty of fish to be caught, and I'm happy for you if your the one catching them.
I've met many really nice people by offering to share space in areas where I'm fishing that are producing better than the surrounding area. Became good friends with a family of six that was fishing from a 16' camp boat one year. They were new to the lake, so I struck a deal, 2 of their group fished with my buddy and me while I helped them learn the lake and some new fishing techniques. In return, the children were put in charge of readying boats and gear each morning and making sure equipment was in order at the end of the day. I thought I was just helping a family have a more enjoyable and relaxing vacation. They were so grateful for my help, they wanted to pick up my tab at the end of the week and pay my deposit for the next year. I refused their offer, but met them at the resort for the next five years. The parents told us, in a letter including a very unnecessary stipend, that my generosity had a very positive affect on their children's attitudes. They looked forward to their week's vacation with their "adopted" Grandpas.
I looked forward to seeing my adopted family. None of it would have occurred if I hadn't offered to share a spot on a lake.
P.S.
We still stay in touch. All 4 children have done very well in their endeavors and we exchange many pleasantries thru out the year.
I don't assume the results would always be this fortunate, but that's how it worked for me.
