That's a shame, yeah, fires are definitely not good. At least you still have your Merc.

Well I finally got to looking at the motor.
Turns out it had a fire under the hood.
He claims it still runs but some parts will need to be replaced.
The fin on the lower unit is partially broken off.
I talked to the marine deller and for $300 they would check it out.
I might offer $1000 and look at it as a project.
Probably will just pass and keep running the Merc.

The Merc 2+2 115 and 125 were IMO extremely durable, dependable, reliable motors, that lacked convenience and fuel economy. One data point - my next and current boat has a 275 Verado. When I go on the same multiple day trips that I used to go on with my 115 2+2 - I am within 1-3 gallons of useage over a 4 day span with my 275 Verado as I was with the 115. The four stroke Honda will be so much better in fuel consumption, you won't fill the gas tank on the boat anymore because it will last so long.
While the 2+2 has lots of strong points - if you want to go fishing, that motor will take you fishing every time. If you upgrade to a 4 stroke, get one that has fuel injection, you'll be done fiddling with choke levers and the throttle, and locking out of gear to achieve a fast idle, re-starting during warm up, all that fiddling around will be gone. The smoke never bothered me, the noise never bothered me, but that's also gone.
Short story - I feel it would be worth selling your motor on the used market, and buying a late model 4 stroke that cost 9-10K, the difference is that significant. You've got the opportunity to do that for $3400? It's a no brainer, you should have done it yesterday.
A Friend of mine replace his 90 hp Mariner with similar tech to the 2+2, to a 90 Merc 4 stroke, and ran his boat for another 8 plus years. That was a $9,000 motor, and he was able to net that a little bit by selling his Mariner, and a kicker that he had. His only comment EVER, was that he should have done it sooner.
The only reason I would hold off, is if your current plans were to sell that boat in the next 1-3 years, that may present a little bit of a pause. JMHO.

I have re-powered twice and made $s doing it.
I first purchased a new to us boat/hull that the wife & I liked that would fit our modest fishing activities.
This was a Alumacrafft Competitor tiller model, going into the purchase I knew I was going to upgrade
the motor sooner than later.
Under a year into having the rig, an oppurtinity came up for a carb'ed four stroke mercury.
It was priced great, picked it up, pulled the Johnson 2-stroke off and sold it for about $800 more than i paid for the Merc.
The following year late winter/early spring a local ad caught my attention, it was a whole older rig with a six year newer Merc 4-stroke efi fuel injected, priced great.
It was a no-brainer that I moved on asap, purchased that rig on a Friday afternoon,
Spent Saturday cleaning the inside out a bit, removed a few things I could use for myself, electronics and such.
Place a craigslist ad up Sunday morning for just my four stroke carb'ed mercury which was still on the transom of our alumacrafft sitting behind the house from winter storage.
I also mentioned in the ad that I had the other boat and trailer and would give a great deal to the buyer of the motor.
Phone rang off the hook, was sold to the first buyer that came to look, maybe an hour after the ad went up. He even helped me uncover and place the battery in the alumacrafft so I could fire that motor up for him. Fired right up after sitting all fall & winter.
He wanted the other boat and trailer as well.
When all said and done, I was ahead maybe $600 give or take, its been awhile.
We don't fish every weekend, but when we do, I have no complaints and would do it again.
Not saying you will make money during the re-power, but so long as the 2 stroke is solid running
you will be able to recover some of the upgrade $s and won't be disappointed with the Honda.
Just make sure you compression test it and maybe a leak down

|Skeeter175||Just for the aggravation of trying to start that cold blooded mercury, it’s worth it. I had a 125 hp 2+2. Upgraded to a 4 stroke when it traded boats. Worth every penny|

|REW||You can probably get $1400 for your current motor so the out of your pocket expense would be $2000 plus any additional cables and or rigging costs.|

The Onda would be an update in MPG, quiet running, easy to start, no smell of oil. The Mercury would almost certainly be faster. I'd bet on the Honda being more reliable, and increase resale. I'd guess you could sell the Merc to close the delta of price difference.
Personally, if it was me, and I planned on keeping the boat, I'd make the deal.

|ltrain||Think that's a real good deal on the motor. I made the switch from 2 stroke carbed to fuel injected 4 stroke and couldn't be happier. I'd definitely do the deal.|

My 2+2 was one of the most reliable motors I ever owned. Minn.. Guy….are you speaking from experience? Not saying it was the absolute best motor ever made, but surely good enough to not be referenced as better than oars. I’m also not saying that you should not make the deal, but I don’t see the need to badmouth a good motor.
