When you title it you will pay the 3% excise tax to the state of South Dakota. Check this publication out from the SD department of revenue.

Your home state.

One thing to check is what the dealer will or is required to do. Should be on your purchase agreement. Some states are "reciprocating" states. That means that the dealer COULD charge sales tax and submit it to his state. You MIGHT then get credit in your state towards your state sales tax. SD has one rate for boat&motor and a separate rate for the trailer. We work with cross state purchases all the time. For us, we split off a title company several years ago. That is all they work with is the sales tax, titles, UCCs and registration.
The general rule of thumb is that you should never pay more than your state rate, and not less. You just MIGHT pay a portion to your dealer and the rest in WI.
The other thing is to be sure you get the correct ownership papers for the state the boat is coming from. SD titles boats and trailers so your state will be looking for those pieces.
When all else fails or your unsure, call your local county DMV and ask what they will need.
Let me know if we can help.
Thank you,

DId you end up buying a boat in WI? Did you have to pay tax in both places?
