Shimano VS. Daiwa spinning reels
I am newly back in the game of fishing after just over 15 years away from it. Back when, it was all about Shimano reels. Shimano Stradic, Sustain, Symmetry, Sedona, and Sahara. I had a lot of each one.
Long story short, as I was buying a lot of new gear, almost everywhere I went recommended Daiwa reels slightly over Shimano. So far, I have purchased two New Shimano reels (Vanford 2500 and Sustain 2500) and two Daiwa reels (Tatula 2500 and Ballistic 2500) They seem awesome. I am liking them a lot. I am guessing this is going to be a Chevy VS. Ford VS. Dodge VS. Toyota type of deal, or am I missing something? This is what I have so far: |

Some of them. A lot of them were left at our cabin when we sold it back on 2005, and some stuff was stolen, borrowed out and not returned or damaged, some was lost in a fire. I decided to start mostly from scratch. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
I've always been a Shimano guy too, but it pizzed me off when they removed the anti-reverse switch from their higher end reels. Don't get me started on that topic because we've already gone though it over and over again on other threads. The Daiwa reels are also good and so are the Pflueger reels. Go with whichever one you like in the desired size and with the functionality you want. It's hard to go wrong with any of them.

I only have the cheaper Fuego, but man, what a reel for the price! It is so light! The only bad thing I have heard about the Daiwa reels (and I don't know if it is specific to a model or not) is the bail spring breaking (or something breaking with respect to the bail).
I haven't used mine enough to really give a credible review of the long-term quality. So, for the $100 range, I would likely recommend Daiwa. The more expensive models, I don't know. I am really partial to the Stradic CI4+. Not sure what model Shimano has now, been a while since I looked at any. I am definitely going to take a serious look at the Curado 300K though. |
i tend to prefer daiwa, i have a couple shimanos that i love (original vanquish c2000hgs, twinpower c2000hgs) but i prefer daiwas, i have several of the certate LT models and they are butter smooth and have had no hiccups in the couple years i have on them. i also have a couple older certates, 2 previous generation exists and a 2017 steez, and they are all amazing reels. if i was looking in the 250 range it would be a tough call between the vanford and the ballistic LT.
i think it comes down to a chevy vs ford type scenario, each brand will have its backers. both brands make a great reel, depends which you prefer! |
My recommendation is for Daiwa.....no, actually, Shimano is #1.......alright, I guess I honestly think that both are the best, really, it comes down to how much you want to spend and what purpose you will be using it for....I will say though that the best reel for 100 bucks that I have bought in recent years is the Daiwa BG. I own two BG 2500s that are awesome....for 200 bucks, I love the Shimano Stradic fl....really, they both have many great reels in their lineup that you can't go wrong! So, for me, it isn't Daiwa or Shimano, it's Daiwa and Shimano!

I have 5 Shimanos but the last 2 reels I've bought were Daiwa BG's. I like them better than the Shimanos.

I have a Shimano Sustain, Vanford, Daiwa Tatula, Ballistic, and adding a Daiwa Kage MQ. Also looking to add two Procyon to my matching St. Croix Avids.

Enough variety in models between the two to have both and be happy.
I tend to like Shimano's but I have used Diawa's in the past and wouldn't turn one with a good drag down. Don't tie your self to one brand. Al |
