I sharpen the flat side of the blades because that is the way the Work Sharp manual shows doing it. There are also videos showing how to do it. Some people use a round tapered diamond sharpener on the tapered side and then use the belt to take the burrs off of the flat side. Using the belt on the flat side worked well for my blades.
