The number of people reporting similar situations may misleading due to the large traffic WC attracts; this thread has about 600 views already. I've owned 6 different aluminum boats over the past 25-30 years, and this is the first time this has been an issue. That said, I'm certainly more than a little disappointed that this happened so soon. My next boat is still going to be aluminum - whether it is a Lund or not remains to be seen.

I'm beginning to wonder if my particular problem isn't more stress-related than weather rot. My boat has been garage kept year-around the six years I've owned it. If indeed Lund added additional transom support braces in 1994, maybe they recognized that the older design wasn't well suited to hold up to the stress of bigger more powerful motors.

When you travel is your motor hanging vertical or is it tilted?

if the bolts, thru fittings or the transom cap arent sealed properly then water will get in. Doesnt matter if it was in the garage or not.

when it gets torn apart you will know if the wood was rotted or not.

It looks like a rotten transom core is what caused the failure. The core is what gives the transom is strength. The aluminum on the outside of the transom is merely it's skin. The same thing that happened to your boat, happens on glass boats all the time. Only repair on a glass boat is ussually alot bigger project. The cuplrit in your case is most likely an improperly sealed motor mounting bolt or thru hull fitting.

You need to remove the motor, remove the transom cap, take out the old transom core (what's left of it), have the damaged aluminum repaired (welded), replace the transom core, and re-install the motor.

Even if you were thinking about buying a new boat, your going to have a hard time selling that boat with it needing a new transom.
