Freezing temps question

Will temps below freezing damage the LCR sonar and GPS? ???

Highly likely. The manual for my GPS states; "The storage temperature range for your instrument is -4 degrees to +168 degrees Farenheight. Extended storage in temperatures higher or lower than specified will damage the liquid crystal display ....."

Yes it can and it has also been known to damage TM's. I'm assuming you remove electronics while trailering because that can also cause damage?

Depends what you mean by "temperatures below freezing". Temperatures in the 20's F may slow down response, but are within specs for the displays. But, if you live in cold-weather country, take the electronics out of your boat and store them in the house. I even bring in my compass after having two lose their fluid during cold winters.

Kind of makes me wonder about my Smartcraft gauges since they seem to be LCD.

Thanks I did mean temps in the 20's I remove them from the boat when storing for the winter. I don't remove them when trailing. What's the difference between a rough trailer ride and going across two foot waves. Seems like the waves is a rougher ride it is for me.

I have an original Lowrance X3 LCG. I think I bought this back in 84 or 85. This unit has spent every winter, until last, in an unheated garage in Milwaukee, WI. I used it for ice fishing since I got it. It still works. I know this unit has seen -25 degrees, and I never had an issue.

Since that time, I have had numerous other LCG's, all Lowrance, and they have all been left in the garage over winter. I have never had a problem.

Now, am I telling you to go ahead and leave it on the boat? Nope. I usually take mine off at the launch, and store them in a locked aluminum case. More for theft prevention, than protcting from the lelements.

The Lowrance manual specifies a temp range of minus 4 to plus 167 degrees farenheit on the model I own. Above or below that can damage the LCD. Check out http://www.lowrance.com/Manuals/default.asp.
