thoughts on kicker for 1750 crestliner

Getting a 1750 crestliner tournament pro in the next month. Its an older rig (1998) main motor is a 115 yamaha 2 stroke. Thinking I will be getting a kicker but what to go with? I am fine with manual start and lift system. Thinking a kicker lift bracket would be nice and something lighter like a 5 or 6hp. I know they won't charge the main battery but figure I'd hook electronics into the tm batteries...that and I usually have a lithium jumper on board. Thoughts on this. Will use it to troll 2-3mph a handful of times a year. I can find 2 strokes cheap, 4 strokes not so much. Don't know anyone who trolls with an older 2 stroke???

just be sure the transom is designed/spec'd to hold a kicker....I think most boats have electronics on starter battery, not TM batteries? others here better with that than me..

I just bought a 2006 prokicker for my 2008 Fishhawk 1750. I spent a couple months looking for a kicker, and specifically looking at 4 strokes. In my search I wanted an 8 horse or 9.9 because I wanted a two cylinder to run smoother with less vibration. Weight savings on a 4 5 or 6 horse would be nice, but not enough to justify not having battery charging ability and the extra vibration.

Are you going to leave the kicker on the boat? Or just put it on the few times your going to be trolling. Yes the single cylinder kickers are have more noise and vibration. Allot easier to take off of the boat then the bigger motors. I would really recommend the 4 stroke kickers instead of two stroke. Allot more fumes blowing around the boat with a two stroke then fourstroke. That’s going at slow trolling speed. Little bit different with your main as you would normally by driving faster. Depending on your boats transom design. It is better just to mount the kicker direct to the transom. Then using a separate mount.

Don't hook your electronics to your TM batteries. You're probably going to have interference issues along with unbalancing the drain on your batteries. It's really a bad idea.


Up until this year I used to use a 2stroke to troll. 1988 and newer Mercury/Mariner can have a controllking hooked up to it. They are the only 2 strokes you can use with a trolling motor throttle control.
It worked quite nicely.

If you do not use your electric motor while trolling. Would not be any interference issues. I’d guess that you do not have any autopilot electric motor anyways. That you would not be steering with the electric motor while using the kicker. You would however want to rig up separate plugs. One from the trolling battery. One from the starting battery. So your electronics could be plugged into the starting battery or trolling battery. If you are casting all day have the electronics plugged into the start battery. So you have full trolling motor power. Just start your main once in awhile to keep the start battery charged up.

I have a 1800 Superhawk, took the 9.9 off replaced it with a 5h four stroke. Did the switch 7 years back and will never look back. I do have a MG on the bow and prefer to use it. Reason i switched the 9.9 to 5h is to slow the boat down. I prefer jigging plastics and trolling .8 and slower, the 9.9 would not even get close. Interference is annoying when you hook up sonar to TM battery. my 2 cents...Chico...

I wouldn't connect your electronics to the trolling motor batteries. You'll get a lot of interference and unneeded drain on those batteries. Either hook them to the starting battery, or like I did, get a dedicated battery just for electronics. That has worked best for me and I never have to worry about draining my starting battery if I'm casting all day.

I bought a 5hp Honda kicker last year.

Only available in long shaft (wish there was an extra long option) but they have the vibration issue down whereas all other single cylinders do not.

If you're looking for something light and easy to take on and off, that'd be my recommendation.

I have a 4hp Nissan 4st. This is on my 1675 Lund. Pretty darn good option at 58 pounds. Pushes any speed up to 5 mph. I use built-in tank and carry a back up 1 gallon can, this way if I have a problem with main tank can get home. No need for pull up bracket( by the way those say you should not trailer with motor on). It does have port to run of main just never the need.

Yeah 8 or 9.9 quieter and a bit less vibration. Weight savings allow me to put a 4th battery on board.
