Default Plumbing Question

This concerns my sister house , lives 350 miles from me or i would go look at it myself. She has a leak in the powder room so after her husband cut away the drywall on the garage side she sent me this picture. House was built in 1990 and uses a well . My question is why are the cold water lines on the left connected together ( also the hot water lines are as well )Any thoughts ?

Picture is leaving out some details. My guess is that her house is built on a slab and they tied runs together under sinks rather than under ground.

I hate buried piping. I don't understand why you would ever do it unless there was no other way.

Actually that part of the house is over a basement. Why the slab is there I have no idea.

Jfish,
One needs more information to solve the puzzle.

Where does each of the 4 pipe in the picture go, and where does each one of the pipes come from.

With this information, I expect that the answer will be obvious.

Without it, I don't have a clue.

Take care

p.s.
What are the diameters of each of the pipes?

It's 3/4.

Maybe the extra lines got run across the garage for some future possibility, like hot and cold car wash station. I've seen people make some crazy Hartford loops when they don't know how to get from A to B.

That`s the problem for me , they are in a red zone which means i`m not allowed to travel there. The pipes are either 1/2 inch or 3/4 , they come up from the basement and terminate at the powder room sink and the toilet. I actually think the leak is in the drain but can`t say for sure. Just never saw copper water line connected together like that . I belief the lines that feed the laundry room are in the basement below the vertical pipes. Thanks again for any answers.

Is it possible that the powder room is far away from the hot water heater, and somebody added return loops to use as a recirculating circuit? Usually only used on the hot water side, maybe somebody ran both to avoid stagnant water sitting in a little-used line?

I don't think that would increase pressure, it would increase flow

So, right now, we don't know where the pipes came from or where they are going?
