Heading up there next week for a week. Never been there before, fishing for all species. Has anyone been there recently or have some ideas ? How about the lakes north and south, are there dams or locks to go through ? Thanks guys

There are dams in Shawano, New London area., no locks.
poygan, Winneconie, Butts des Morts, Winnebago are all connected. Probably better fishing in these lakes this time of year. They are huge, Where are you staying? Size of boat? How far are you willing to travel. There is a good 25 miles of river, then the 3 big lakes, lots of water. Makes it hard to fish without some very local advice and tips. Lots of panfish, walleye, sauger. |

As was previously mentioned the lakes (Poygan and Winneconee, Butte des Morts) might have better fishing this time of year. From Freemont down to the lakes navigation should be good however there are a TON of large pleasure boats making the trip up and down on weekends. Personally I wouldn't even bother fishing the lower stretches due to the heavy boat traffic. Head upstream if you are intent in staying in the river or fish at night when things settle down. Deeper holes hold walleye and catfish this time of year. Watch your electronics closely. Smallmouth fishing can also be decent. Be careful of deadheads closer to the edges of the channel. Good luck.

Just took a ride on the Wolf out to Poygan. Boat traffic was minimal during the week and also ,you don,t have to worry about the no wake. Like, mentioned before, there is a lot of traffic on weekends so be careful and I would head out to the lake to fish.

You will have no problem navigating the river. It is wide enough from Fremont south to handle the boat traffic. North of Fremont it gets narrower but has less traffic. Like has been said most folks will be fishing the lakes this time of year but the smallmouth fishing in the river should be good. You can take almost the whole day just cruising the river from lake Winnebago to south of New London. You'll go through lake Poygan, lake Winneconne, lake Butte Des Morts and end up in OshKosh. It is very scenic north of Fremont and well worth the trip. On a side note just going by your name Green Bay is a little over an hour away and is putting out some good muskies. Lake Winnebago and Green bay for walleyes. Bay shore park north of Green Bay on 57 is a good place to launch if you decide to take a day trip. Fremont is a nice little town with bars that serve good food up and down the river. Teds grand view is a supper club on the north end of town for a nice dinner and Red Banks a little north of there for a cheeseburger. All accessible by boat.

Try pulling SR5's 35 ft behind boards on Poygan. Should be able to eek a limit of keepers plus some bonus big crappies. Lot's of water in the chain. Start small and work out. It takes years and decades to learn the Bago Chain. |
