Fishing for other species besides my target species. Learn the habits of the prey and you will learn the habits of the predator.

Bow mount with i-pilot, I don't know if it made me better but it sure is easier.
Good electronics & time spent learning to use them.
Youtube especially Tom Boley has upped my game in the last year or so.
Precision trolling app. I use the 50+2 method a lot this time of year.
Retiring, I spend a lot more time on the water now.

I think there are a number of items that has impacted most fishermans success.
1. Lake maps, there are very few secret spots with the mapping available. You don't have to use land marks and monkey nuts to stay on your spot!
2. Bigger boats- all the big lakes have gotten smaller. Pretty easy to run 25 miles across the lake and reach spots that were very untouchable when a 200 was considered big.
3. Electronics, side scan, down scan, livescope....they can't hide!
4. Internet- fishing forums, information sharing, and a 2nd vote for Tom Boley youtube videos.
5. Bowmount advances- spot lock and trail recording.

I also think a general acceptance of trying something different. Twenty years ago there wasn't much lead core fishing, not many people anchoring and jigging, etc. On the lake I fish, not many people fished after mid-July. Not the case anymore.

elecronics, fishing a lot , Youtube, forums, fishing with others.

I wish I liked to fish tournaments as I think that could be really good, but alas, I compete all week so when I fish I dont want to compete..

Developing a continuously better understanding of the reasons fish act as they do. This understanding can evolve/change as additional situations and better explanations become apparent.

One example of a change in understanding: It used to be considered a known fact that walleye were light sensitive, particularly to sun light; in reality that was incorrect, the reason they prefer being in shade/low light is because they have an advantage there which makes it more difficult for their food supply to see them.
