Default Jeep Grand Cherokee DIESEL

Anybody know if the later Jeep Grand Cherokee (2018) DIESEL's have a problem with the pollution equipment like the earlier models(2014) did or did they fix that problem ?

From what I have read, the later version has less problems than the earlier generation. That said, I really can't find much that shows what the changes have been. I'm surprised you're able to find a 2018 with the engine. I know it was an option in 2018 and 2019, but I don't think I have ever seen one.

FWIW, I have a 2014 GC ED that I am very happy with. Probably my favorite vehicle I have had. I'll soon be ordering a new Jeep, and I would 100% get the EcoDiesel if it was offered in a new one.

This suggests engine changes didn't happen until 2020.

i don't know about any problems but the wife brought one home one time and took it on a weekend road trip and it seemed pretty peppy and went a long way on a tank of gas, a really long way

I have a 2014 GC Diesel. I'm thinking about getting a 2018. My 2014 is "really superb" except for the pollution equipment has given me problems --It has power like you wouldn't believe to pull a 18 foot boat and on the highway -no boat- it gets 28-29 mpg . But, if the pollution stuff gives trouble I can't afford the repairs. I was hoping they got the bugs out on newer models but can't really find much info on it.

Take a look at this board you may find what you are looking for or post your question there. I have been following info on mine since I bought it (it's not a diesel). Lots of good info there.

I hope this helps.

I understand what you are saying. The good news is that with the settlement, you have an extended warranty out to (I think) 120,000 miles. My turbo was replaced last year (under warranty). It was a 2 day repair where they had to drop the engine and transmission. I can't imagine what that would cost if it was not under warranty.

That said, I think expensive repairs are just nature of the beast these days. My wife has a 2019 Ford Expedition MAX with the EcoBoost. It is suffering from the cam shaft rattle, and on the list for repairs. I was told that is a 10 hour repair as well.

Expensive repairs are not just a diesel thing.

They have minimized the amount of problems from the earlier with different software in the ECU. There were also injector part number changes. You won't see a lot about it, but it was a 2.5 year venture involving lots of paperwork with the EPA and for some states, the C.A.R.B regulations.

They do better at every elevation than high elevation while pulling a trailer.

Bottom line is that not all the problems are gone, but it is much better than earlier builds.

Husker 525, You gave a great informative reply! Thanks ... I'm guessing you have experience with these vehicles so I'll ask you "would you consider buying a 2018 GC diesel vs a 8 cylinder gas ? Thanks

I had one of the early model ecodiesels. I never got anywhere close to the advertised mpg. Never had any real issues with the motor and transmission. The exhaust system almost left me stranded unable to tow my boat.

For me once I figured in higher cost of fuel, higher maintenance costs, and the fact the vehicle surrounding the powertrain was a Raging POS I offloaded it and have zero regrets about going to an older vehicle.
