Please fire away and help me decide
Buy it now before they change it again!! Put the motor on it which will fit your needs. I don't understand the logic in buying for "resale value" or "because you can".
I too was in a position to buy my "retirement" boat. I could have bought a bigger boat than what I did. Yes, there are the rare occasions when a bigger boat would be nice. Yet the size I have, better suits my needs 99% of the time. It's my boat, it fits my needs, it makes me happy. What more do I need?

A bigger engine may not help the boat perform or handle any better for the conditions in which you are going to subject it too. I used to like driving my motorcycle at speeds well in excess of the posted speed limit. Was it fun, sure. Do I trust myself to drive at that speed now that I'm a bit older and my balance and reaction times are not the same? No, I don't. I don't know that I'd trust myself to drive a boat a 70mph either. And hog wash to saying more power is always better in tough conditions. Always good to have enough power but beyond that, what's the difference?

It's not about speed. It's about having the power to do what you need to do. Like getting out of the hole of a 5 footer when your loaded with 4 people and a livewell full of fish. Like dodging caps and swells or popping on plane when loaded down. Speed is a side benefit. Those boats need the hp to perform, not for speed.

You probably don't need a 400hp outboard, but if you want one why not get one!
IMO, you should be happy with either motor.
Before they started coming out with these high HP outboards, many guys fished big water with way smaller motors than are available today, soon the discussion will be do I need a 7 or a 800HP motor!

About the 99% reason that you need 400hp is for personal vanity.

Hahahaha.

I figured it was just a matter of time before this response got posted. There's always that guy.

I guess if you never took your boat off the trailer and actually enjoyed it, you just sat around at the ramp waiting for someone to tell you how awesome you are, this might be possible.

If you're out there enjoying all that power and having fun in your boat, then I don't see what "vanity" has to do with it in any way. I sure as heck wouldn't care what others thought while I was out having fun in my 400 HP boat.
