Default AM/FM Antenna

Is it a must to buy an AM/FM antenna for a radio or will a VHF antenna work? Assume the AM/FM will provide better reception when it comes to the various channels.

I have seen where a VHF antenna could be combined to use as your AM/FM radio antenna but personally have not tried one. I added a rubber ducky AM/FM antenna on my boat because boat builders think a wire wrapped under the console is all you need for reception. This added antenna improved my reception some but not great. Some days I can get WGR 550 as far as the Catt and others day almost nothing on the AM side of reception. I have given up dealing with that and now use my cell phone for radio reception as it's crystal clear all the time.

However, on my old boat I installed a used car radio with a car antenna that had a booster on it plus it extended and I got very good reception with that set up. If it wasn't for my cell phone reception I would try this set up once again.
