I see Stikemaster came out with a new 40 volt lithium ice auger to compete directly with the Ion X. Probably too early in the season for comparisons. Any thoughts on one or the other?

Go with the brushless drill set up. Cheaper, multi use, easier to carry extra batteries.

There are many options out there. A lot of fans of the Milwaukee set up.

Yep
I'm using a clam plate and a fuel with 2 5ah batteries with a 7" auger. Haven't even burned through one battery in a day.

Looking at the Clam 8" drill/auger combo.

While normally a Dewalt guy, I'm wondering about the Rigid
18-Volt Gen5X Lithium-Ion Cordless 1/2 in. Brushless Compact Drill/Driver Kit with (2) 1/5Ah Batteries, Charger and Bag
Like the idea of free batteries and service for life with registration.

Assuming registration is not buying a service contract.

Anybody have any thoughts on this?

I had the Rigid as did two of my friends. Worked pretty good for a year... then no dice. Kept having to pull the battery start again, go a few more inches and it stops. Pull the battery try again and again and again

Know 4 people personally with the fuel and no problems yet.

You do not have to buy a service contract. Just sign up online. I took mine to a repair place. Pretty much a waste of time. They couldn't replicate it so I just sold it.
Worked fine as a home drill.

Been running a heavy duty (can't recall the model) 18 volt dewalt for 5+ years. Keep two batteries with me and hasn't failed yet. I will bring out my gas auger once ice becomes 2-3' deep.

Sold my Strikemaster Lite and got an ION X. Not a thing wrong with the Strikemaster - we have a 6 hole wheelhouse, the SM did not want to re-open old holes, the ION re-drills old holes with ease and even reverses to flush out some of the ice chips. Don't know about the new SM unit, but they usually have quality items.

Just made my 8" K Drill purchase on Friday. Went to Acme Tool to purchase a drill to accommodate the power drive he suggested i go with the Milwaukee 1/2" 2703 M18 Fuel ask him about a promotion that you would get a 3rd battery free he replied that is correct, also said they will go on sale Friday at 15% off and the rep will be in store with possibly a better price. Have a bro that made his purchase last year does not use the clam plate just the handle seen it in action nice and light just have to know how to punch the holes correctly cuts like butter. Buying the drill this Friday. Hoping to get the drill for under 250.00 total setup around 500.00.
