Default Humminbird 1 foot contour map too cluttered to navigate

When I am boating in south Lake of Woods the 1 foot contour map kicks in on my Humminbird Helix 12. But there are so many contours lines, so close together, that it is Really hard to navigate and even see the marker buoys. I like the tight contours for fishing, but for navigating they are a real pain in the rear end. In fact, they’re dangerous!

Can I turn them off. Or, how can I switch to the old hydrographic map that was so easy to use to navigate?

Help - please!!!!

Unfortunately it is built into the background map in the unit itself!

So I can’t take out a chip.

Frustrating?

Which chart display level do you have selected?

Basemap might help you out in steep drop off areas. You can't adjust the contour density on Lakemaster maps with the Helix. (you can on a Solix) I have many areas that are that way. Without being able to tell it 3' or 5' contours you are SOL. I have found on steep slopes(10' horizontal movement changes depth by 30 or 40") it is not very helpful anyway. If you don't have basemap loaded, do an update to get it.(free) Bob

I was reading the Lakemaster manual. Go to the chart view. There is a setting for contour lines. Make invisible your selection. If you don't see that option set your user mode to custom instead of Angler. It should be in the chart view as an option. Bob

I don’t have a chip in the unit - relying on Fed. govt. hydrological map.

But where Humminbird updated the map to 1 foot contours it looks like this.

Very hard to navigate amongst reefs and rocks and buoys.

As h8 says you can buy an HD map. Or turn them off as you asked about. Bob

You could zoom in more or if you are using the Lakemaster chip set a color depth from 0-8 feet or what ever you are comfortable with this way all shallow areas will show up easily in the color you choose. I use red as my shallow water color and use 0-5 feet makes navigating s easy..
