Sharptail and Hungarian Partridge in western ND
Heading to Dickinson ND area to do some Pheasant Hunting and looking to add Sharptail, Hungarian, Grouse to the target list. I have hunted pheasants out there before but never targeted the other species.
Looking for recommendations on areas to start? Any help will be greatly appreciated. I have English Setters so bigger areas are not a problem. Thanks

Bill-
I have hunted the NW corner of ND around Fortuna, Crosby and Grenora since about 2000. Probably a good jaunt from Dickinson but we've had pretty good luck getting sharpies over the years. Mostly I'd look for hilly, thin grassy areas off the beaten path. Most of the time we'd be on an unimproved road coming over a hill in the truck and bust about 6-12 of them as we would crest the hill. We would watch were they landed and then go after them. Otherwise pay attention to round hay bales. They like to hang around them also. A lot of times the grass is almost non-existent so anything they can hide by is golden. My brother in law owned a cabin that he rented out to a sharpie hunter that used horses and pointers. He hunted the whole month of September for them. He'd pretty much start from the cabin and take a ride 5-6 miles out and work his way back to the cabin. He always said crest hills slowly and look for them on the other side. I'd be heading out Friday morning myself but something came up at work.

Traditionally, the best Hun hunting has been near Highway 2. The best pheasant hunting has been along and south of I-94. The best sharptail hunting has been between the prime areas for the other birds, kind of along Highway 200.

Anybody been out there? A hunt like this has always been on my bucket list. Its a long wasy to go but hunting multiple species of birds at once would be cool. This year I have Ruffed Grouse hunted every weekend since it opened. My best run yet. Some weekends just a couple hours but those are the trips I always seem to get something. Pheasant opens for me end of Oct with Iowa opener then I go back once more which is lame.
Deer seasons everywhere can get in the way in Nov. Even though I wont be deer hunting this year I dont like to bird hunt where gun season is open. |

Have seen very few grouse and huns. And I mean very few. Have a half dozen huns that show up in my yard at least once a week. Shot three on opener and have hardly seen any since. Have shot hoards of pheasants. They are very thick this year.
