Smile Engine Data On Lowrance Elite FS

Is there a need for an external converter to show engine data on the Elite? Specifically Mercury

All Mercury engines require an external "Vessel View" converter as part of the NMEA network in order to be used with Lowrance, and I think, to be used with any OEM sonar unit.

That in itself would be fine, it's the sky high price that Merc wants for them that really annoys me...

Not Mercury, but on my Elite Ti with a Honda, I needed the NMEA 2000 network, and a Honda specific cable from the Honda to the NMEA 2000.
