Default Shimano Failure

I've had this Shimano Sedona feel since 2015 or so and it broke while setting a hook this summer. I've never seen a reel break on the neck like this. I called and emailed Shimano customer service multiple times and their response was for me to ship it to them and they would inspect and clean it (!) for a fee of $50. The reel was only $50!

I have a couple of Shimano reels from the late 80s and early 90s and they still work great. Given my recent experience I'm inclined to go with Plfluger or Daiwa. Are the rest of the recently made Shimano reels all this bad?

You got 5 years out of a $50 reel. I don't think you could expect much more than that. I also had a Pfleuger reel break in about the same spot. Threw it away and bought a Daiwa to replace it.

That sucks, but, take a good look at the metal. It's NOT hi grade Hi carbon steel. If it was you pay a great deal more than what you paid for that reel.

Look on the brite side, you get to go shopping for a new reel!!

Things happen. Who knows if it was a problem with the original casting or if over the last five years something like dropping or stepping on happened to stress it. After that amount of time I have a lot of trouble leaving myself out of the equation when something I've used a lot breaks.

I agree and 5 years without a problem proves it was not the casting being defective. And what a joke about setting the hook caused that handle to break! Cmon Man! Bob

The neck part that broke is not metal. I'm assuming it is some type of plastic or carbon something.

And yes, it broke while setting a hook. That is what is so bizarre.
