I got invited to go on a fishing trip up to Lac Seul next summer and have heard you need an Original Birth Cirtificate and a Drivers license with a picture on it. Is this true??
Thanks

you will need a certified birth certificate and a picture i.d. you might not need it, but if questioned you will need it. we get ours at the cityhall..i think it was $16 for the birth certificate....you need a picture i.d. (drivers license) to get the birth certificate ;)

That is what your suppose to have. Most times a drivers license is enough. It's up to you if you want to risk it. I've never needed a birth certificate but you never know.

It is not necessary to change

Ive made 5 trips through and never been asked for more the my Drivers License. I have heard that they do turn people back if they are asked and can't produce one. I wouldnt go without one. A Passport will work also.

It's either a birth certificate or passport. Last time I crossed, I got a seriously hard time with only my driver's license, though they did let me through. This was the Detroit/Windsor crossing.

The official skinny on requirements for entering Canada are available on line at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/index.html
Its my understanding that at the present time US citizens can enter Canada with a picture ID like a drivers licence but that customs officers have discretion to demand more proof of ID.

I agree with Tom. I have crossed over at International Falls dozens of times and only showed a drivers license a couple times. THis fall, crossing at Windsor I got a very hard time. I was told that the drivers license only proved that I could drive, nothing else. After much hassle, I was let through. I will have my passport next trip.

I also have heard alot of people say that they run your name...and if you have any DWI's or misconducts that you have to pay for some special waiver? Is that true? A DWI 15 years ago makes a difference on if you get into Canada?
