Default Mold on carpet in compartments

Here is the run down, I leave my boat up north in a garage when I am not using it. I don't have to haul it back and forth all the time this way. I didn't realize that one of the compartments was wet and didn't leave that compartment open while it was stored. I now have mold growing on the carpet in this compartment. I have a couple of questions here. What is recommended to clean this mold off? Also, has anyone ever replaced their carpet inside of their compartments with vinyl or something else? I also thought that there was supposed to be some kind of protectant that was sprayed on the carpet to prevent mold. I do not use this storage compartment for anything, only thing that is in it is my onboard charger. With the moisture and amount of water that gets into my compartments, carpet is not a very smart choice. Any help and/or advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Just take a mild bleach solution and that will remove the mold.

In the future, whenever you store the boat - always leave all of the compartments open to allow fresh air to circulate through your boat.

I assume that already, you only store the boat with the drain plug removed?

I also personally like to leave a fan running in the boat for a couple of days after a trip when there has been a lot of rain or big waves that might have brought some water into the boat.

If you have a source for 110v power at the garage where you store the boat, you can get a single event timer and put a fan or fans in the boat and compartments and let the fans run for 24 hours and then have the timer shut the fans off.

Won't the bleach take the color out of the carpet?

Very little bleach should be fine. Should be like pool water consistency.

Concrobium......absolutely the best mold/mildew product I have used. Safe on farbics and carpet. Can be fogged into large areas for mold abatement. Comes in quart spray bottles and gallon containers. Safer than bleach. Available at big box hardware....got mine at Menards.

Check out the reviews. I have used it almost everywhere with good results.

Actually I found the spray cleaner for bathrooms "Tilex" cleans off mold right away when other cleaners including a strong solution of bleach wouldn't get the job done. Used a few times in my old in the back starboard corner on a blue rug and no ill effects except the mold was GONE. But still always be careful when using any cleaner on exposed materials.

That stuff is AMAZING IMHO.

Howdy,

Don't rule out vinegar as it works well on mold too.

Take care,
