I used to run a 90hp tiller, In rough water i had the rudder set up so the tiller handle pushed at me a little bit. This way the handle would push on my knee (a little) and take some stress of your arm. This seemed to work good for me in rough water.

I have a Ranger Tiller with a 60hp motor. Not really a problem going long distances with it. I can adjust mine to let go of the handle if I want to. In big waves it torques some. If my left hand gets tired I reach across and hang on with my right hand for a while or both hands. That being said if I consistently drove more than 10 miles at a time I would look into the steering systems available or... gasp.... buy a wheel.

Times Have Changed
Tiller steering in fishing boats has improved over the years. Properly adjusted trim tabs, correct engine heights, props that do not create excessive torque and longer tiller handles have certainly helped. The new steering assist and power steering systems currently available have allowed almost effortless control of running a tiller steered boat. In the past running extremely rough water would be very difficult to do for the average fisherman. With the new assist and power steering systems for tillers today? That too has been eliminated. The Merten's Titan steering system for outboards up to 125 hp is a user friendly, trouble free, economical, effective and virtually maintenance free system.
For convenience and ease of handling my recommendation would be to go with a steering assist or power steering system. You won't regret it. Pete Harsh / MR.TILLER |

If you run in cooler weather get a face shield or a helmet with a shield. They make a cool or wet ride much more enjoyable. Get to your spot and toss it in a storage locker until next time.

If you can afford buy your self power assist. I've run tillers for 40 years and if you make long runs on rivers or rough water where you are trimmed down you can't beat the power assist.
I run a river, up in Canada, that is a 36 mile winding trip and the last 2 years I've had the Mertin on my 175 and it is so much easier that my old 75 or 50hp were with out it. On Lake Erie in rough water sweet. Pete knows what I mean listen to him. Paul |
