Minnesota DNR Rountable 1-24-2020 Input Wanted
Tom Neustrom and myself will be moderating a 3 hour session Friday night at the DNR Roundtable. Certainly fishery issues to come up is the 4 fish statewide walleye limit proposal. Use of two lines etc.
Here is my question. Do any of you have any concerns with Minnesota fisheries now and the future? We want to hear from you to any thoughts, comments criticisms you may have. Here is your chance to be heard and I will share what comes out of this discussion on this forum afterwards. Respectful criticisms of the DNR fisheries are fine too. As I'm sure you know I'm against two lines for open water. However if it were to become feasible I would expect a hefty fee for the license to allow a second line. I see no reason to allow two lines under one license. The DNR is always begging for more money, there is the route to get some.
Item 2--- More enforcement. I mean boots in the field, not butts in desks. Our resources are being raped (over-limits) and polluted with litter. Enough already. Item 3--- I'm not sure where I stand with limits. I'm mostly a catch and release guy anyway. My opinion is you can over legislate slots and limits. I would rather see education and enforcement used.

Do you know how to set up a poll on the two lines. To survey those for and those against. If so go ahead and set it up. Last edited by Gary Korsgaden; 01-21-2020 at 02:27 AM. |

If 99,000 were for and only me against would it make you feel better?
It’s a opinion subject, my opinion is i’m against. Doesn’t make you right or me wrong. Besides the DNR marches to their drum not what the taxpayers think.

I support a more restrictive limit or very short winter season for ice fishing on lakes in all states.

I wholeheartedly agree with the additional enforcement. I think overharvesting is much more common than many people realize. Littering has reached ridiculous levels as well, especially on the ice. Additional officers could possibly pay for themselves if they are out there handing out citations for littering and over limits. |

People are going to over harvest no matter how many lines they can legally use.
Two lines, keep limits at 6 and much more strict enforcement. Like said, butts in the field, not behind a desk. Al

As a tourist I would be for fishing two lines. I do allot of solo fishing. I like two lines because of that. I also would link the limit of four fish to the two lines. As far as go to four fish and two lines both. For lakes that have super high walleye populations. You can always have higher limits on those. As far as poachers. What makes people think that they will follow the one rod rule. If they do not follow the limit rules. The Winnebago system in Wisconsin went to a three fish limit. They could have gone to a two rod instead of three. They decided to use catch limits instead of lower rod limits.

It's not just about harvest though. Two lines will lead to more fish being caught. It's one more line per person that can be used for trolling. I know I would use one line for bobber fishing and the other to throw cranks. Even with catch and release, more fish will inevitably die from hook mortality.
