I've used Cannons for a number of years, I fish for salmon a lot in the Puget sound. I really don't like the lever release for lowering the ball on the Scotty. British Columbia fisheries did a lot of testing on Positive Ion Control systems and concluded that it DOES have a positive impact on salmonoid species.
The first time my neighbor and I went salmon fishing in his boat with Scotties reaffirmed my opinion that the Cannon is a superior product. My Ranger 621 has tracks on the gunnels so the down-riggers fit nicely there.

There's a lot of downrigger install videos on YouTube. I use scotty riggers with Chamberlain releases on lake Huron, they work great.

Totally agree on the Chamberlains, anyone who uses downriggers SHOULD be using Chamberlains!

There’s a lot of options on riggers, I went with magnum metalz 130 FPS and could not be happier. They are extremely well built. I like the slower speed. I hit up and walk away and when I come back they are slipping on the smooth as silk clutch. The clutch has saved me many times when I hang up a ball fishing near bottom or stripers over submerged timber. It works like a drag system on a reel. I also prefer braid so that ruled out cannons due to needing wire for auto stop function.
As for mounting I would not use those crestliner track mounts, but if you did I would put some square stock or something similar in the space between the mount and gunnel. That way it can’t flex as much and put all the pressure on the track. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Anyone letting twelve pound downrigger weights swing around on a flipped up vertical positioned Big Jon boom, doesn't know the correct way to use them. That's what the ball cradles are for. You flip the boom up with one hand, simply handle the ball with the other hand and lower the ball into the weight cradle. That secures the weight in the cradle instead of swinging around on the end of a 4ft. boom and it puts the release right in front of you just a few inches away for simple easy resetting. I takes about as much practice as learning how to use an open faced spinning real without getting a birds nest on each cast.
