up until last yr, we had been using the scorpion spoon with good luck. but last year we had much better luck with the larger spoons. but you can still catch fish with the small scorpion spoons don't be afraid to run one side with the large spoons. our best speed was 2.7 to 3.0.

after my fishing trip in late July, I made a trip with a friend who fished nothing but cranks on wire and a couple of shallow cranks on divers and we didn't even start out until around 8:00 am. but we fished the 1st 2 days and had our limit before noon. then on the last day we fished, we had our limit in like 1.5 hours from the time we started setting hooks until the last fish went in the cooler. so I'm going to try shallow bandits on my divers this yr and see what happens. we plan to start the day with shallow bandits on the starboard side and a large jawbreaker spoon from galeforcetackle.com and a purple ladderback spoon that I don't remember but it caught fish like crazy last yr. then my son will pick the 3rd spoon to run on the port side. then we'll run 2 shallow cranks on 2 downriggers which caught a lot of our fish last yr.
if you run spoons try small on one side and large on the other. then if the fish are choosing one over the other then switch them out. but if you have a few shallow diving cranks like bandits try running a couple of them in your spread. just be careful of the hooks on the cranks. if you do try cranks make sure they are tuned correctly. I even bought a deep rubber net from egos2slider.com. they are much deeper and much lighter than the old rubber nets. last yr our best speed was 2.7 to 3.0 but some people like 2.2 to 2.5 but the faster speed worked better for us. I'll be on the water at geneva from the 25th through the 30th weather permitting. I go by last chance on ch 68 give me a shout if your out there. |

the scorpions will catch fish anywhere on Erie. I used small spoons for the last 10 or 12 yrs until last yr. we heard over the radio big spoons were killing them. we drove over to the fish USA store and my son bought this large purple and black ladder back spoon. well, I thought we might try a couple more, sure enuff that purple and black was eating them alive. so I switched 2 more to big spoons and they were great but nothing like the one my son got. so we went back to fish usa and bought more large spoons. so it's not a bad idea to have a few of both sizes. also, I buy a lot of tackle at galeforcetackle.com they have the small and 3.75 spoons and they work as good as a stinger for me and less money. they have some great colors but a jawbreaker dr death and reverse muffin has been great for me. but I've had a lot of their spoon colors that are good. they also have harnesses in the same colors. i have run a lot of their harnesses with great success. they did do special orders for me but I made pretty large orders. Vicki and Amanda would even tie up tandem harnesses for me all in the color I wanted some of the colors I dreamed up.

Fished in May and we used the scorpion size on big boards with jets, and did just fine.
Of course we always catch tons of small white bass, walleye's that are 6''-10'' and sheephead, was thinking going to a larger spoon might help with cutting down on unwanted fish. I have what I feel are enough bandits, husky jerks,p-10's etc, just not many spoons of different sizes. I'm going to look into some larger size spoon's for walleye's and see how it works out. Thanks Again.......Greg

Right now we are pulling standard size Michigan stingers and will be be transitioning to the magnum size mid August. We run the scorpions earlier in the year. The spoons progressively get larger thru the year as the size of the bait increases. Same thing with stick baits.
Remember, a walleye will try to eat something a third of its size. Sent from my SM-A505U using Tapatalk |

We fish bandits and small stingers 99% of the time, hard to get him to try anything else,I guess he figures if your catching fish why change. My thoughts are maybe switch up a few baits once in awhile and see if you can catch better fish, maybe less undesirable fish and possibly catch your fish with less time spent on the water. Thanks Again Guys..........Greg
