Torque Tab
For those of you running tillers that have steering torgue. I know this issue has been beaten to death. I would like to give a response that may help some of you. I run a tiller F90. I experienced allot of torque to the right till you get trimmed out. This is okay on nice calm waters. Now you guys and gals know when it gets rougher out there and you need to trim down to cut the waves[especially when you cross cutting the waves] the torque increases. Adjusting the trim tab has little effect. Well I bolted on a Torque Tab from TH marine. I cut it down about an inch and a half. I must say this has been one of the best bolt on mods for me. I can run now with allot less trim and have Zero torque. Your grand mother could steer this boat. I am amazed at how this small piece of aluminum works. I know allot of the bass guys that have this torque have been using them for years. This is by no means as nice as the Titan steering[as you know now is only available for Mercury] But for less than $20 bucks its worth it at least for my rig.

X2 on your results
I've been running shortened torque tabs on my tiller motors since the '80s- 15 and 25 Mercs. People chuckle when they see the little tab- but I have the last laugh because my boats steer with near zero torque at the handle. Of course, a tab is just about the first thing I add to my big motors too- after testing for torque at the wheel at max speed and best trim. I have hydraulic steering on the big boats, but you can still feel the boat being harder to turn in one direction- meaning that the motor is crabbed off to one side. My current 150 Merc 4S needed a tab cut to 3.25 inches for best response- and added 1 mph to top end because the motor is now running straight at top end.

Anyone have a link to the torque tab purchased?
I too at times as stated above can hardly steer my tiller in one direction. Much better after raising my motor one hole but still can be tough in certain water crossing waves at an angle.

No wonder I couldn't find it. The OP said "TM Marine" Not TH Marine

I had the same issue even with the trim tab all of the way to the starboard side.
Since I did not have access to anything else, I used a couple of heavy hammers to put a bit of starboard bend in the bottom of the skeg. Perfect. All of the torque steer is gone. I have the motor mounted high enough so that when running trimmed up, the trim tab is pretty much out of the water. But the skeg remains in the water. With the curve in the skeg, the torque steer is solved at any trim position. Be safe |
