The 1# cylinders use a Schrader valve like the ones in your vehicles tires valve stems and can be removed with a valve core removal tool so the cylinder can air out. What you can do with them after that I don't know, maybe a metals recycler will take them. Personally, I refill them like the previous poster does.

OK how do you do that so it's safe? The bottels say not to refill.

POLK COUNTY (WCCO) — One person is dead and another is in the hospital after a garage explosion and fire Saturday, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office says the incident occurred at 657 U.S. Highway 8 in Apple River Township. Stanley Johnson, 81, was inside the garage “actively filling a small 1 lb LP cylinder from a larger 20 lb tank” when the small tank ruptured and ignited the escaping gas. Johnson’s wife, 77-year-old Nancy Johnson, was in the garage area when the explosion occurred. She was pronounced deceased on scene. Stanley Johnson was able to escape the garage. He was transported to Amery Regional Medical Center for treatment of his injuries

Do not refill. There was another story just this winter about a bottle blowing up in the refillers face. It's not worth it. Just toss them or buy a 5#/11# tank.

hard to justify re-filling when they cost like $2.50 a piece.
as far as disposal you can take them to the dump. some dumps have hazard waste disposal that you can use. |

Do Not Attempt Filling 1# Cylinders
Do not attempt to fill 1# cylinders. It is illegal and dangerous as a previous reply shows.
Those 1# cylinders contain a mixture of butane/ propane. That is of a lower pressure than straight propane. Filled with propane only those cylinders can and do rupture. Besides any cylinder is to be filled to only 80% of its water capacity to allow for expansion. That is impossible to do with out the right equipment. Overfilling a propane cylinder is highly dangerous also. There have been many accidents and fatalities from that practice also. Which is why that too is illegal. |

i have been refilling them for years... a few of my friends do it also and have never had any issues. They sell valves for this reason. I bought mine right from Mr heater.
I know there are guys out there using home made valves ect. refilling a 1 lb tank isnt any more dangerous than hooking up your 20lber to your grill, I actually think its safer than that as there isnt any flame produced by the 1 lb tank...IMHO |

Does anyone hook up a 15lb gas grill tank to there big buddy heater. How long does it last? I know depending on settings your time will differ but any estimates. I know it will chew through a couple #1's in about 4 hours.

For one thing it is not illegal to refill them, if it was they wouldn't sell the refill adaptors at almost every bait shop, hardware store, farm and fleet, etc. they are no more dangerous to refill than changing the 20 tank on your gas grill if you do it right and use common sense. I have been refilling mine for many years @ about 60 cents each, I have buddy heaters and a propane lantern and save a lot of money each year doing it.
