I have sent emails with no response to the guy from Ranger who got the ball rolling the first time.

If I am understanding correctly you took the boat to a dealer you did not buy from and expect them to keep it indoors for you?
You expect the dealer who you did not buy from to write you a check for batteries? If Ranger will not pay them they would be stuck, correct? Ranger does not send a truck to pick up a boat but back hauls a boat if appropriate on a space available basis. Rangers reputation for outstanding service is well known but it is impossible to please all of the people all of the time.

If you read from the beginning you'll have a better understanding of what the situation is. No, I didn't expect them to keep it indoors, but a simple call to me letting me know that it hadn't been picked up would have been nice. Instead it sat there for near 3 months not winterized.

While you may not like it I think you are on the hook for the batteries. Ranger certainly isn't going to pay for them. I doubt the dealer will either. You ultimately are the boat owner especially since you bought from a private party. Best thing to do now is get the boat on the water and see if the winter caused any other issues and move on from there.
Like I said, you aren't going to like it but..........

"The thing I'm not happy about is the (4) batteries that were in the boat as it was sitting in R&R / Rapid Sports Marine's lot in Shakopee, Mn until late January freezing"
Welcome to boat ownership. This is 100% your fault. You should have removed the batteries and stored them. There is no need to send a rigged and ready boat to the factory. Why is it that a lot of people are trying to find someone to blame as it is someone else's fault? IMO, The dealer and Ranger have zero obligation to remove the batteries for you. For the record, I have sent a boat to the factory over the winter for repairs. NOTHING was left inside the boat. I stripped it clean. |

Lesson learned, go to costco or sams and buy some new batteries and use the boat.

Operator error, failure to properly winterize and prepare boat for return trip to factory.

I can feel your pain with the batteries. I had my boat in for fiberglass at a place in Antioch, IL for work last year. They bumped a switch and burnt out my battery and a couple of pumps. My fault for not pulling the battery. It was a pretty expensive AGM battery too. I was pretty miffed because it was just one more thing added to the long punch list of other mess ups by them. Awful, awful fiberglass place. I think I would have been happier if a bunch of preschoolers would have done the work lol!!!
In terms of your batteries, I would look at it like this: Whether it was outside in the MN cold, or in the controlled environment of the Ranger factory, the charger likely wasn't going to be plugged in anyway. Chances are you'd have battery problems when you got it back anyway. If you would have charged them, disconnected the leads, and left them in the boat, they'd be fine in the cold (cold is probably better for them anyway). My bigger concern would be your live-well plumbing, possible lower unit freezing with water in there, and as you said, other things that needed to be prepared for winter. I really hope things work out with your boat |
