For nothing but pheasants and clays I would be looking at a 20 guage for a novice user, assuming you can use lead. Smaller frame, easier to handle, plenty of knockdown for any ringneck roaming the wilds...

A pump gun is probably your best bet, I have an 870 express, Winchester makes a nice pump gun now....
