Opinion on annual oil change
I moved to a lake that is under 80 acres. While I use the boat to fish a couple times a week, I'm only driving it a few blocks at most and around 5mph.
Any opinions on dropping the annual oil and filter change down to every other year as I'm never really stressing the motor or even under power much? I haven't even used a quarter tank of gas yet this season. |

Just putting around like that I would be changing the oil every year to get rid of the condensation of gas and water in the crankcase. When you open up the throttle and generate some heat you can get rid of most of the water and gas vapors before they condense and mix with the oil. I always figure oil is cheaper than a rebuild.

Oil is the cheapest preventative service tool there is.

Hmmm. Guess I'll contact Yamaha, and perhaps downsize boats if they concur on need for WOT driving.
I'd feel like a goof driving around this little lake at 50mph. 😕 |

Jethro,
I suspect that the recommended oil change for many of today's outboard motors is 50 hours of use. But, as is your case, check the oil's appearance if you drain a bit out and check for the condition of the oil. If there is no moisture in the oil - as indicated by a "milky" appearance to the oil - very little reason to change the oil at the end of the season with such few hours of use The same is true of lower unit oil. After the engine has been sitting idle for a week, remove the bottom drain plug and check the appearance, color and condition of the lower unit oil. If the oil is oil colored with no appearance of milkiness, and or if no moisture came out of the lower unit - when the bottom drain plug is pulled for a couple of seconds - there is little reason to change the lower unit oil. In my case, I think that the last time that I changed lower unit oil was 5 years ago Not a lot of hours on the motor each year any more and thus, with no moisture in the oil - no reason to change the lower unit lube. But if you want to change the oil and do service on the motor once every 30 days or some other time interval - fine. Your equipment, your money and your decisions. Take care |

For what it costs definitely change every year. You need to work that engine way more than that.

Jethro,
Do yourself a favor and once a month take your boat and motor to a bigger lake and ring it out and run it for a couple of hours at wide open throttle. You will enjoy the ride. Good luck |
