Truck Cap question for F-150 owners
I just bought a 2019 F-150 and would appreciate your input regarding putting a cap on. I have a few questions I hope you can answer from your experiences:
1) What truck cap do you recommend? I would like one that: a) Matches color of truck. b) Has a similar brake light as on the back of the truck cab that is on back of the cap with the brake light but also the white lights like one on the truck that help illuminate the rear area of the truck at night. It should lock for security so fishing gear is locked securely if need to leave overnight in truck. c) Best one for being water tight and security. 2) Do you notice any significant reduction in MPG as result of having a cap on versus having it off? 3) Do any of you use/have both a Tunneau Truck Bed cover type of some sort (just a cover for the bed) and a cap? In other words use both types of cover for the pick up bed or is it best just to go with one? Any insight on why you chose your covering. Best one for being water tight and security. 4) Are those covers that just cover the bed waterproof and secure so that when the tailgate is locked no one can get items under the bed cover? Thanks, Just looking for some insights from your experiences I never owned a truck before. Mostly need a cover for the bed for fishing equipment, luggage etc... when traveling. |

Leer makes a pretty decent truck cap, the truck we just sold (09) model had one that had the colour matching cap. It didnt leak and was good for keeping things dry and secure but the only down side was that you can look into the bed of the truck and see what was in there, so really didnt keep to much valuables in there. It did lock but then again they could have easily pried the back window open. I believe a cap would actually save you on gas as the wind would not ball up (I know there is another term for it) in the box in front of the tailgate and cause drag. Never heard of anyone having both a tonnue cover and a cap on at the same time but im sure it has been done. I just put a tonnue cover on our new truck I went with that instead of a cap because of the easiness of being able to put stuff in the box. I got the hard tonnue cover that folds for the security of putting things in and no one being able to look in and access the box when the tailgate is locked. Again it should also save on gas as there will be no drag from the tailgate. Just my thoughts. Fisherman 1792 |

My F150 came with a matching color ATC cap. It's the LTD model. Has all the features you mentioned. No leaks or issues with it to date. It came with it, so no mileage comparison, but my truck is getting the rated MPG. It locks, but like most others, if someone wanted to get in, they could easily.

I'm buying a new to me truck soon, hopefully. I am going back and forth with cover or topper too. I was trying to price toppers over the weekend and man they are pricey. ARE quoted me base at just over $2000 and with what I want on it over $3000, I guess I will do without all those things I wanted.
Leer, ARE, and the rest are all pretty much the same with slight differences, it is the dealer that installs it that will use the correct weatherstripping, wiring for your backup light etc. I want a topper because of its "secure storage" (that is an oxymoron) and I want to set it up to be able to overnight in it once in a while, cant do that with a cover. Plus the dog prefers a topper too! |

So far my tonnue cover seems dry and secure. The cover locks down from inside the bed so no external hardware and can't access it with tailgate locked. Cheaper than a cap as well. Also very easy to remove it all together if I need to where as a cap your pretty much stuck. Each his own though. Fisherman 1792 |

I installed a rigid, bifold tonneau and it is reasonably secure and dry.
If you don’t have a specific need for a CAP, I don’t recommend buying one for one reason: weight. They typically weigh 175 to 200# which eats up a valuable chunk of limited cargo capacity of a half ton truck. |

I got a SnugTop. The color match was great. It has the top center brake light. It does leak a tiny amount around the tail gate windows if it’s out in a real windy blowing frog choker of a storm.

If you ever consider having a fifth wheel trailer you will want a folding tonneau cover.
I just fold mine open and hook up the trailer. Helps keep things in the front of the box out of site. Last edited by Clairebear; 12-02-2019 at 05:32 PM. Reason: Spelling |
