Yes. Same spud as a Scotty rod holder, except for the 5/16" bolt through it.

Nice job.........well done.........you will be surprised how little stress a downrigger actually puts on the boat......unless you snag the ball up on the bottom.

Thump I definitely give you an A for effort and ingenuity, but I'd be careful with that setup.
I agree with a couple of the other guys, run a tether. I'd hate to hear that you lost a rigger using a small plastic mount. You will definitely be testing the strength of it.

When I did mine, I did not want to put any holes in the boats or otherwise change the boat.
I used a cedar plank to mount the riggers and rod holders. then, the cedar plank simply sits on the gunnel and there is a forward facing bar that is attached to a tow bar mount. Remove two pins, the rigger bar with down riggers and rod holders mounted on it, comes off the boat and is removed for storage. When trailing the boat, I just remove the rigger bar and set it on the floor of the boat. When it comes time to go fishing, lift the rigger bar in place and drop over the mounting pins and insert two pins to lock it in place. Rock solid, no additional holes in the boat and it is all very convenient to use. Good luck P.S. You have done a wonderful job with your machine work and have devised a great system that works well for your boat and your self. |

Cheap skates....use Teak wood. I like the rigger idea. Let us know how they hold up. Too bad nobody makes the bases and accessories in all aluminum. Even at say $50-100 it'd be worth it for something like this

Here's a pic with both of my 8 lb balls hanging from one rigger.
I'm quite confident the shaft of the downrigger will break before the holder does. As far as rotational force, like I mentioned, my 9' dipsy rod twists harder than this will. And Bobby don't worry...I never have that ball even close to bottom. REW- I did the plank thing on my last boat. It worked fine, but this is 10 times easier and faster, plus I don't have a giant board running across my boat. I can fit these riggers in my storage compartment. |

When I did a lot of walleye tournament fishing we ran riggers and Great Lake boards all the time. Depending on the time of the year I ran my 10 lb cannon balls near the bottom and many times scuff the bottom while trolling. Never once did we snag up but I guess there is always a first time. But for salmon fishing, like you said you will never be near the bottom.
