Exclamation Trailer Refinish

Have a Ranger 692VS (18'9") with a tandem axle Yacht Club trailer. Trailer has a lot of rust spots and paint coming off all over. Thinking about attempting a refinish myself. Could leave the boat in a marina for a week and have a friend with a shop and a sandblaster we could use. I am wondering about paint though.

Has anyone had any experience doing this, what tips can you give me as far as taking it apart and more importantly, how to paint it (what paint to use, coats, how to apply, etc).

Thanks in advance

After sandblasting why not have it coated by LINE-X or do it yourself
with a truck bed coating.

Or after sandblasting have the trailer powder coated. The powder coating will continue to look like new for years and years.

Be safe

Powder coating might be good but Line X and those other truck bed linings are pretty rough textured, so road grime, dirt, etc., will get in the texture and be hard to clean IMO. I would paint black or a color to match/compliment the boat, Any automotive paint should work well on the trailer, just remove all the rust, primer and put a couple light coats on, one heavy coat will not last anywhere near as long as 2-3 light coats.

Blast it then have it powder coated with plastcoat. I did my dad's 4 years ago, it still looks as good as the day I did it. He also has to drive 2 miles on gravel.

This is TRUE...........I have what Polar Kraft calls their Tundra Coat as a option on their trailers. It tough as nails but hard to make it look clean. Overall it will last MUCH better then paint. My last trailer looked like crap with all the rust spots. Rather have a dirty looking trailer then a rusty looking trailer.

Plastcoat is a powder. No primer is needed.

We did my bro-in-laws Tracker trailer several years ago. Sandblasted it, primered with automotive primer and shot it with black rustoleum that we reduced with thinner till it sprayed a nice pattern. Looked awesome and held up great.

What you do and what you use is probably dictated by how much money you want to throw at it. If you want the best I would have somebody powder coat it. Keep in mind that to do this everything will need to come off e trailer as the powder is baked at a high temp, which is what makes it very durable. Winch, wiring, lights....everything except metal that is going to be painted needs to come off.

Painting it with a good automotive grade 2 component paint or a 2 component polyurethane is a fairly good option as well.

All depends on how much you want to spend and what you can do yourself
